Google-Bombing: A Follow-up

  • May. 25th, 2006 at 8:08 AM
Christmas - Snow
Wow. In less than 24 hours, the Google-bombing idea has been picked up on Making Light, Smart Bitches, and Miss Snark.

You know, I actually felt a few ethical qualms as I watched this thing spread. But here's the bottom line. Nobody's libeling Barbara Bauer. The only thing I really want to accomplish with this is to get the Top 20 Worst Agents list to the top of the Google results, so that anyone considering signing with her knows what they're getting in to. That's what Google is supposed to do: provide relevant and important information.

So, a few thoughts on the Google-bombing:

1. When you make the link, make sure the link text is Barbara Bauer, like so:

<a href="http://www.sfwa.org/beware/twentyworst.html">Barbara Bauer</a>

If you make the link, Hey everyone, Ms. Bauer is #3 on the top 20 and on her way to the top, the problem is Google will only index that phrase in the search results.

2. If you're comfortable with it, include instructions to help your readers do the same. We want this thing to spread. You're welcome to link to my LJ, if you want. [info]angelhunter also has a very nice write-up at http://angelhunter.livejournal.com/127241.html Even if you only have a handful of readers, it helps to spread the word. I'm not exactly a big fish in the blogger pond, but look how far this thing has already gone.

3. The Stealth Bomb. I'd like to expand this beyond the blogging realm. But maybe you aren't comfortable with Ms. Bauer's name plastered all over your website? Fortunately, I've got the answer. Create a stealth bomb. You need to know a little HTML, but only a little.

It has been pointed out that the Stealth Bomb is a violation of Google's guidelines, and could result in the site being pulled completely from their index. Details at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=40052.

In short -- just do it the old fashioned way. Thanks to anonymous for pointing this out, and I apologize for the misinformation.

I like bonus points:

Barbara Bauer - Congratulations! You've found the mystery link. Ms. Bauer is #3 on the Writers Beware

This is a great idea! My blogger doesn't deal much with writing, so I think I'll update it to read what you've posted on your site so it'll still count toward the rankings. Thank you!

Congratulations! Your bonus points shall arrive in the form of a reputation point boost when I see you over on the soon-to-be-resurrected AW board.

If the icon was available in lj-land, there would be a happy Snoopy dancing here! :) Thank you for the future rep point! :) I can't wait for AW to be back . . . I admit, I'm an addict.

Aside from the ethical qualms, how does it feel to come up with something like this, then watch it spread like a snowball turning into an avalanche?

The obnoxious answer: Oh boy, oh boy! I can't wait to finally get my very own blustery letter from Ms. Bauer!

The honest one: It's a bit overwhelming, and I do feel like maybe I've jumped in without testing the water. I'm also not sure how much credit I can claim. Writers tend to be smart folks, so I can't be the only one to have come up with the Google-bombing idea. Still, it's a proud feeling. If it works, I'll be thrilled. Heck, even if it doesn't, the word-of-mouth about Ms. Bauer is still quite satisfying.

The selfish answer: Hm ... I wonder if this will lead to any pre-orders of Goblin Quest ;-)

I'll do a review of it on my site once it's out~! (sorry I have NO traffic), but @ least I will buy the book .. haha...

Just a warning--the stealth link is highly frowned upon by Google. If you do a stealth link and they find it, I believe their response is to yank all references to the offending website for a few weeks. Here's a link: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=40052

Thank you. I've updated the entry and changed my own stealth link to an old-fashioned, visible one.

Dang. Here I was feeling so clever about that, too :-P

Kewl. Just didn't want a horde of writers to have their sites yanked because their Righteous Wrath drew the wrath of Google! ;)

More Ideas
I've suggested a couple of additions to the concept on my other blog that many of the Absolute Write bloggers visit - feel free to pass them along.

Please do remember, Barbara Bauer is #3 on the Twenty Worst Agents list because it's in alphabetical order.

She may be a vindicitive (insert appropriate euphamism here), but there are actually worse scammer out there. NYLA, Desert Rose and several others have probably done worse over time that Barbara Bauer.

She and Cris Robins are just the noisiest.

But, she does seem to draw attention. Apparently between Miss Snark and Making Light and here, the entire list is getting the attention it deserves.

As an aside, how does it feel to be in that company?

Ah -- good to know, and I probably should have caught that.

I've been thinking of redoing the list so that each agent's name links back to the SFWA list, then putting the code out for folks to use when they repost it. Sort of a 20-way Google-bomb.

I would love to know what the other 19 think about Ms. Bauer's antics, and the aftereffects :-)

As for the august company, I'm both flattered and a little overwhelmed. It's awfully fun to watch, though!

I can't speak to the others, but I do know even for all of Boppin' Bobby Fletcher (and his myriad of sockpuppets)'s threats, cajoling and drive-by pooping on Absolute Write, he's never gone out of his way to draw attention to himself the way that Barbara Bauer has.

. . . Yet.

"You know, I actually felt a few ethical qualms as I watched this thing spread."

Commendable, but bugger that! Not that I'm suggesting people go do bad things, but someone has to stand up to BB's brand of crap, ESPECIALLY since it's a brand of crap that's all too common nowadays. And all we're doing is telling the truth, nothing more.

Though I do understand the "holy shit" reaction. Mass Internet movements are usually the sort of thing I read about. Participating (even peripherally) in one is a new experience.

Snort. You'll notice I haven't taken down the post or anything :-)

And yeah ... in the back of my mind, I keep thinking, "Why can't word of mouth spread this well for my book, too?"

It’s a natural defense mechanism for Mrs. Bauer to react like this. Nobody has put her on this list, but herself through her own shoddy business practices. The fact that she is fighting it so intensely is only giving people a reason to look at a list that would have other wise gone unnoticed by all but the observant. Such is the way of things; she has no one to blame but herself.

Also I found your blog Via Miss Snark. I hope you don’t mind if I add you.

Still catching up with posts. And I agree completely, but alas, it's very hard to look at one's own responsibility for this sort of thing, and I suspect scammers have to practice a very special sort of rationalization and doublethink in order to sleep at nights.

And by all means, add away! I'm gona have to do an "Introduce yourself" post soon to find out more about all of the new folks :-)

Spreading the word
We are just a small group...only 75 members but I've posted the list and link. We'll help spread the word about her and her kind too. I'll be updating my blog in a bit also.

Special thanks to all those who watch out for us writers so we have time to do the writing:--)

75 is nothing to sneer at. I had less than 100 readers here on LJ when I first posted the idea. Gotta love that viral explosion of information :-)

I do think there are some ethical issues to take into consideration, here. Google bombing someone you dislike in order to hurt them is probably unjustified meanness. Googlebombing someone in retaliation for something that they've done is qualified meanness. There is, however, an argument to be made that this particular agent preys upon new writers, and therefore increasing awareness of her predatory nature by linking her name to a published list of predatory and exploitive literary agents is a positive piece of activism. The fact that it also has the effect of discouraging her from using threats of lawsuit to suppress free speech is a secondary effect. The fact that it may be very satisfying is a very small tertiary effect. ;-)

I would like to say, though, that these pile-ons can sometimes get out of hand. I'd encourage everyone to think carefully before attempting to contact this woman, and before writing extensively on the subject, and before making personal or disparaging remarks. Her professional record should be sufficient. Providing useful information is one thing. Much as we dislike this person, she does have some basic right to go about her business. In fact, we'd all like it very much if she'd mind her own business, which should not, in any way, be about limiting what information others can share about how she does her business.

In light of all this, I feel comfortable participating in this pile-on, but I am getting out of it if it turns into a lynching.

I'd agree with you pretty much on all points, for legal reasons as much as anything. The oft-repeated advice goes, "Truth is absolute protection against accusations of libel."

Truth: She's on the list.
Truth: She appears to have been involved in getting AW shut down.

That should be all that's needed. And personal slurs and attacks do give Ms. Bauer more grounds for accusations of libel and cease & desist letters...

The only thing I'd question is that she has the right to go about her business. Since her business preys on new writers...I dunno. She hasn't been busted for fraud, that I'm aware of, but that could just be a matter of time.

More what I had in mind when I say "business" is walking the dog, balancing her checkbook, washing her car, checking her email, calling her mother, etc. I've seen these things spiral way out of control, so am just expressing a hope that everyone stays at the level of facts and professionalism. I'm not sure she has any right to continue working as a literary agent. If it were a profession such as medicine, where one could have ones license revoked, I think it would have been.

Nope. After this, she should be forced to drive around in a filthy car, with people writing rude notes in the dust of her windshield.

Or not :-)
