Voting Time: Contest #1

::Waves to all of the new folks::

I've currently got two contests running for the release of Goblin War [Amazon | Mysterious Galaxy]. The LOL contest will go up for voting tomorrow (just in case anyone wanted to head over and make any last-minute suggestions).

Today, we vote on the book donation contest. I'm going to give away a copy of the entire goblin trilogy, and I asked you to suggest some ideas on who those books should go to. Now it's time to vote.

If you don't have an LJ account, you can either comment anonymously and leave me some way to identify who you are, or else e-mail me at jim -at- goblinquest.com. I'll leave the poll open for at least a week.

Thanks to everyone who offered ideas. I wish I could afford to send books to all of your suggestions.

Poll #1140877 Please vote for as many choices as you'd like.

Who should receive the goblin trilogy?

PV2 Lucas Dalton, US Army, "an amazing human being, fantastic husband and wonderful father."
The Trinoc Con Charity Auction (funds go to the Literacy Council of Wake County).
Local library (either public or school)
Make-a-Wish Foundation (also offering a visit from one Jim C. Hines, a not-so-famous fantasy author :-)
Local children's hospital
Fantasy fan & writer who lost her entire library in a fire
High school librarian in Wisconsin who's on a mission to get kids reading
12-year-old whose family had to leave most of the library behind when they moved. (He's dyslexic and autistic, but worked his way through Lord of the Rings, and he and his family would probably love the goblin books.)
Battered women/children shelter
Foundation for Katrina victims
Community Mental Health crisis unit

Tough choice! I finally voted based on "OK, where will the books do the most" and in my mind, that meant the possibility of them being read by multiple people.

I was thinking about that too. Being an indecisive schmuck, I voted for all of them, but I might go back and revise my choice :-)

You people came up with too many good options!

1. I almost voted for all, but kept myself to 3.

2. Tell your publishing house to make some donations from all their authors. :) Tell them to advertise it everywhere and call for all their writers to donate a copy of each of their own books PLUS a copy of their favorite novel. Tell them to get ALL the publishing houses involved and all the authors in America and they can spread the love to all the groups you have!! *nods* Yup. I believe in you. Now scoot. Get to it.

A lot of tough choices there...

I know!

If there's a clear second place winner, I may toss in an extra copy of Goblin Quest, just to keep me from feeling guilty about not sending books to all of 'em.

argh! I don't know what to pick, how about all of them?
Feb. 19th, 2008 05:21 pm (UTC)
That's what I voted for :-)
Feb. 19th, 2008 09:28 pm (UTC)
Boy, am I glad you made this a multiple-choice vote.
Feb. 19th, 2008 11:46 pm (UTC)
Me too. I don't think I'm going to be as nice with the LOL caption voting, though :-)

Tough choices
Wow! It was tough to choose, but I narrowed it down to the 2 nearest and dearest to my heart. Obviously, they would do so much good in all of those places.

Hopefully, the LOL contest will be easier (and less guilt ridden).

Thanks for doing this. You're awesome.

Re: Tough choices
The guilt was an unexpected side effect. I'm already feeling bad about not having enough books to send them to everyone...

The LOL contest should be easier ... as soon as I wade through 50 or 60 suggestions to pick out the top 10 or so. Eep!

I'd be happy to sponsor a copy of the trilogy to one of the runner ups. The whole family loves Jig.
Feb. 20th, 2008 12:46 pm (UTC)
That ... would be incredibly awesome. And unexpected. Thank you!

Hm ... okay, this is dangerous. Now you've got me thinking.

ETA: Robin, I've set up a PayPal button at http://jimhines.livejournal.com/347793.html. $16 covers all three books at my discount. Does that work?

Also, I heap praise upon you in that entry for your general awesomeness. I hope you don't mind ;-)

Aww, shucks. :)

Donation received - thank you!

Thanks also for testing the Donations button. Good to know the thing actually works :-)

Do you have any objections to being mentioned when I do the wrap-up entry next week?
Feb. 20th, 2008 01:27 pm (UTC)
LOL, glad to be your test subject! Mention away- I'm happy to help!
Feb. 20th, 2008 07:06 am (UTC)
Tough one, but wherever they go they will do good. Deciding is tough and well voting is the best way to solve it. Hope it doesn't end up with too many ties.
Feb. 20th, 2008 12:58 pm (UTC)
We've got enough votes that I don't expect a lot of ties, but we'll see how it goes. Definitely not an easy choice...
Feb. 20th, 2008 02:28 pm (UTC)
That's good I am excited to see.
Feb. 20th, 2008 01:54 pm (UTC)
My vote goes to where I think it will be read the most, but they are all good choices!
Feb. 20th, 2008 02:15 pm (UTC)
I've received two donations so far, which means the top three vote-getters will all be receiving a copy of the trilogy :-)

Hey Jim-
I don't have an LJ account so I'm voting here. Here are my top three choices:
1.High school librarian in WI
2.Books for kids
3.local library

I'm Katie, by the way. And I'm shamelessly voting for places that might get your books the most exposure to more people/kids. A very generous contest. Cheers!

Feb. 20th, 2008 04:06 pm (UTC)
I'll make sure your votes are counted. Thanks, Katie!
