Snoopy
War on Pat Rothfuss: No direct response from Mister Rothfuss yet, though I note that he has constructed some sort of arctic super-soldier prototype. The goblins do not fear these frozen warriors!

Men and Rape: Over 200 comments now, inclusing some very insightful discussion, as well as some powerful stories.

Goblin Books: According to my 2007 end-of-year royalties numbers, it looks like Goblin Quest has earned out its advance ... except that the reserve against return means it hasn't really. Currently, DAW is holding 4000 copies in reserve on Quest, and 4500 on Hero. That number should continue to decline as time passes, and I'm also pretty certain that sales from the beginning of 2008 would also push Goblin Quest over the "Earned out" point. So it's not official yet, but looks very promising.

Family: Sick kids. Sleepy parents. It's been a fun week.

The Mermaid's Madness: Passed 60,000 words on the rewrite yesterday. Ah, yes. I remember this part of the story. This is the part where Jim's plotting skills took a vacation in Hawaii, leaving several chapters of incoherent crap to fix up. What fun...

Purely Random Update: I love the fact that the Transformers Animated show has a character based on The Tick. He's voiced by the same actor who did the Tick cartoon, and he even gets Tick-like lines, shouting "Energon-y goodness!" and similar things. It's a shame he's such a jerk.

After a book has been out a year, it is sometimes possible to extract a little of that reserves money.

Quest has been out a year and a half. The reserves number is steadily dropping ... it just hasn't dropped enough for me to be officially in the black. Yet.

Publishing is slow. The money will show up eventually.

Congrats on Goblin Quest! Do you know what percentage of books earn out their advance? (the ones with a professional advance, of course)

Not a clue. It also depends on the size of the advance. Quest was a first novel, so had a relatively small one...

You could ask [info]arcaedia when she does her next Agent Manners question call. She might have an idea!

Good idea, thanks!

I appreciate you posting about the process. It's something I've had a curiosity about for some time, and not many authors are as open about it as you've been.

That's neat. Thanks.

Glad to hear it! Maybe tomorrow I'll blog about the point in the process where I say, "Aw, crap," then go back and rewrite my outline to try to get a handle on this book. For the fifth time.

Not my favorite part of the whole writing thing...

Goblin war spotted
I was at Fred Myers yesterday ( not sure how big a chain they are, grocery/department store combo ) looking for a local street atlas, and passed by the SF/Fantasy section in their book department.

Didn't see Qwest or Hero on the shelf, but the rack was really chaotic. Not organized in any fashion I could see.

Re: Goblin war spotted
Thanks for letting me know! That's the first time I'm aware of that any of the books have shown up in a grocery/department type store. Were these new books or used?

Now if only Walmart would follow suit...

Re: Goblin war spotted
Definately new.

They had a roughly 4' wide by 5' tall rack, all paperbacks in the SF/F section.

Oh, and the books were all front cover out, not spine out. Also stacked 3 deep, but not all the books in the "stack" were the same book, or some author. Like I said, kind of chaotic.

Also, sold at full price and not marked with any sort of discount.

Yay on Golin Quest! It's still progress, and you're getting there. (And I recommend your books all the time, so I'm hoping at least some of them will heed my advice.)

And wow. Sentinel Prime sounds awesome. I used to love The Tick.

Don't you just love returning to work to find the work off on some adventure without you? I realized the other day that my novel pretty much in that state. Keep up the great work, Jim! We're all counting on you.

Heh heh heh... nice touch on the Tick trivia. Are you - or the kids - watching Transformers Animated? is it worth watching?

My three-year-old and I have been watching the show since it started ... purely because he likes it, of course!

I'm enjoying it so far. It took some getting used to. I grew up with the original series in the 80s, so it took a while to adjust to much weaker Autobots and much more powerful Decepticons. But it's been pretty good, and there are an awful lot of inside jokes and nods to the original series.

Library Goblins!
With all the fallout from our accident it's been a couple weeks since we made it to the library. Stopped in tonight and of course had to scan the new arrivals section. Found Goblin Hero!!! A quick check of the card catalog informed me that they also added Quest, but that's already out on loan *grin* Apparently they finally acted on my recommendation, and i thought you'd like to know :)

(They won't be getting War for a while, as policy says books must be out for at least 6 months first. Don't get that, but *shrug*)

Wow. That robot's rockin' the chin and everything! That's the best thing ever, and will be until the next best thing ever comes along.
