Gen Con

Snoopy
Certain individuals ([info]brainstormfront & [info]antonstrout, among others) have convinced me I need to go to Gen Con in Indianapolis this summer. Which now means I need to find a hotel and figure out transportation and all of that fun stuff. So, are any of you writing folks going to be there and wanting to split a hotel room?

I have nothing intelligent to say today, so instead allow me to recommend Jon Hansen's brilliant mash-up of Elmo's World and Lord of the Rings: http://www.logicalcreativity.com/jon/2008/05/i_have_no_excuse.html

Enjoy!

I hate to say it, but unless you find someone already with a room, it may be a case of S.O.L. GenCon hotel reservations usually fill up at the beginning of the year. I pondered going, but I was told by others who are already going in a group that hotel space is quick to go and even starts opening up after the previous con.

Hopefully, I'm totally wrong and you can make it there. I won't be this year, buy maybe next.

There are hotels a few miles out from the convention center. Nothing within walking distance, but parking or cab fare won't kill me. This is what I'm currently calling "Plan B" :-)

Don't have a hotel room to split with you (my husband would probably be irked), but I'll see you there!

Spouses can be so fussy that way :-P

Well, if you're going I guess I can go, which means we could commute either from my digs in Bloomington or my Mom's place NE of Indy. That's kind of my plan for InConjunction, as well.

You obviously don't have to go if you weren't planning on it. I can figure something out, even if it means grabbing a hotel and commuting.

But if you do want to go and this wouldn't be an imposition, shoot me an e-mail?

I LOVED the Elmo's LOTR. That was hilarious! Gonna have to link it. Oh yeah. Thanks!!

As a geek with two young kids, I thought it was brilliant :-)

We already have a room (I hope--waiting on confirmation yet from the actual hotel not just their housing bureau), but, if you get an author table, you get the closest hotel and excellent rates for the event. Stop by and say hi...I'll probably be lonely since my DH will be off gaming :)

So does this mean you're going to have a table? I don't think I'm going to have one, but I'll hopefully be doing a lot of the author panel/discussion events. Still talking to people about that...

yeah. I'll have a table. It's my first con, so I'm not sure what to expect.

Oh! You'll have a good time. It's such a wonderful way to get your geek on for four days. I'm rooming with my husband, but if you can get Anton to vouch for your character, you can sleep on the floor.

Oh. Wait. I just realized I'm relying on Anton's word there. Never mind. Offer retracted. ;)

Regardless, I'll see you there! Looking forward to meeting you!

Good point. Personally, I think I'd be more trustworthy if Anton refused to vouch for me :-)

Native here
My husband works in downtown Indianapolis. We are NOT planning to attend, however I will point out that I-465 circles Indianapolis and the cost of a rental car plus the cost of a hotel a few miles out will probably still be less than the cost of a downtown hotel.

If you like Mexican food, try to stop by Acapolco Joe's for some of the best Mexican food ever. Esp. try the Chile Con Queso. It's a hole-in-the-wall place but the food is worth it.

Re: Native here
Thanks, Linda. Having glanced at prices, a downtown hotel definitely isn't my top choice. I found a few 5-10 miles out at less than half the price. (Even assuming I could *find* an open room closer to the con!)

Acapolco Joe's? So noted, thanks again!

Re: Native here
Let me know what you're looking at and I'll tell you what I know about the neighborhood around the hotels.

As a general guideline: The north side is the upscale side. The south side is the second best area. The west side depends upon WHERE you are on the west die and the east side is a dead zone. Note I live on the east side.

I live in the area too...
but I doubt I'll ever go again except on a press pass.
The one time I went, a couple years ago, I only enjoyed the few media guests that were there. The cost of admission wasn't worth it. Maybe if I was actually into gaming I might have enjoyed myself more. lol

Have a lovely time! I very much enjoyed my GenCon experience, and look forward to the day when a publisher will pay for me to go there again. ;)

I'll be there...
...but sadly my wife and daughter, who are already "sharing" my room, would probably not be keen on room splitting. On the positive side, you've made the right decision to go...it's a good time!
