Monday LOL Book

LOL Snoopy
LOL books think math is hard. Previous LOL books are available at http://jimhines.livejournal.com/tag/lol.

Today we have Saturn's Children [Amazon | Mysterious Galaxy], by Charles Stross. And if that blurb by Gardner Dozois is correct, we should expect to see "Best Barbiepunk of the Year" anthologies cropping up any time now :-)

::Picks up 12 inch brake drum from desk and proceeds to pound it against his forehead, accompanied by the following mantra:

I'm sure the slush pile at Darwin's Evolutions will soon be overflowing with new wave Barbiepunk!

Here Charlie wants a "Brown Bag Award" for that cover, and you splash it across the blogscape...

Well, yeah! :-)

I did ask him first, though.

Graphics make a difference. That's why I gloat over the success Kevin Wasden's had in finding cover art for us.

Now I have to read the book to find out what that purple globe's about.

Barbiepunk -- shudder!

Thank God someone thinks so - sometimes I wonder about other ADs (especially whichever one approved that cover.)

Sounds like you've got the start of a great story for Darwin's ([info]alphastk) 'zine!

Yikes. That is one unfortunate cover. And I don't mean your LOL.

From what I know about the book, the character is supposed to be a pleasure-bot, which helps to explain the cover. I'm told there are nods to Heinlein's book Friday, which might also explain why we're following in the cleavage tradition.

Sweet zombie Jesus! [info]matociquala told us about that cover this weekend, but that's a thousand times worse than I imagined.

That's nearly worse than that Legolas vampire cover you dug up.

Whoa. That's crazy talk. Few can match the glory of PA's Vampire Legolas.

Eh. This cover's a piker - not even in the same class of "suck" as the original HC cover for Sarah Hoyt's "Draw One in the Dark", which single handedly manged to kill the book's numbers (along with, perhaps, the tendency of the big box stores to freeze out non-bestseller Baen titles). At least this one still manages to appeal to that market segment obsessed with overly-endowed vinyl figurines...

That cover bears striking resemblance to Poser art.

That said, I somehow love the idea of "barbiepunk". ;)

You know, once I made the LOL, I started thinking there might be real possibilities with the subgenre....

I've been reading that book for the past week. It's very much a Friday-esque book, and yes, she is a pleasurebot, and yes, the cover is very eyecatching. It's also a lot more accessible than some of Stross's books. :>

Barbiepunk as a concept frightens me. With stories like "I Have No Groin And I Must Breed" and... no, not gonna go there.

Oh, poor Charlie. That's the worst cover I've seen in a very long time. Yet I feel I should now welcome our new Barbiepunk overlords with some pink confetti and festive cake made to look like a doll's skirt.

Now I want to see purple haired Barbies, darn it! (Not that I had Barbies, growing up, hehe) The outfit, though, hsa to go. It clashes, and it's too gauche. :p

I have just started reading his books - have 'done' Glasshouse and am starting on Atrocity Archive! In the stylish scifi-thriller UK edition covers (thank the Geography fates!!)

I like the *idea* of the Barbiepunk cover ... but the execution is horrible. Still he seems to be doing pretty well for himself so one bad cover ... well ...
