Post Penguicon

  • May. 4th, 2009 at 8:58 AM
Me!
Penguicon seems to attract a wider range of authors and other guests than most Michigan cons. Got to see lots of old friends and some I hadn't really met or spent much time with before. Lots of fun, if a bit exhausting. I survived:

1. The 6-hour workshop/panel marathon OF DOOM. (8:00 am Sunday morning until 2:00 pm with no break.) I enjoyed the chance to do a lot of panels and keep busy, but this was a bit much. Thanks again to Angela for donating a McDonald's chicken wrap to keep me conscious through that stretch.

2. Battle with John Scalzi for the Coke Zero. Photo by Alethea Kontis ([info]princessalethea), who has a bunch more posted. Click the thumbnail for a larger view. (I won this battle, probably because I had the advantage of youth.)

3. The writing workshop with the marvelous Cat Valente ([info]yuki_onna). This was actually a lot of fun, and the participants seemed to appreciate it. (No crushed souls this year.) As always, I learned a fair amount myself from everyone. And I think if Cat and I were to collaborate on a novel, it would either be the most brilliant thing ever, or else the universe would implode :-)

4. The mass autographing session, which took place an hour before the dealer's room opened, and was hidden away in the back in a room which hadn't actually been set up for us. Being authors, we improvised. Elizabeth Bear ([info]matociquala) gave a marvelous impromptu reading from some of our books to try to wake up the "crowd" (and I use that term very loosely).

5. John Scalzi's surprise 40th birthday party. Thanks again to Catherine Shaffer ([info]cathshaffer) for scoring me an invite to the year's most exclusive event. Though it was a little creepy the way that one balloon kept trying to molest Catherine...

6. The Humor Panel. I was foolish enough to ask "Who's moderating?" Which everyone knows is a good way to get yourself designated moderator. Fortunately, I had a plan. I waited as Scalzi explained his theory of geek humor, then turned to the rest of my panel and said, "Now everyone tell him why he's wrong." Scalzi vs. Everyone makes for great panel. We had drama and conflict. Alliances were forged and shattered. We even had some good discussion in there. (You'll notice John Scalzi has been in three of these points so far. My theory is that there were multiple Scalzis this weekend. Possibly something to do with the masquerade? I think one of them may have been Wil Wheaton in disguise.)

7. Liquid nitrogen ice cream. I missed this at last year's Penguicon, but this year I managed to sneak in and snatch the very last bowl on Friday night. Go me!

Despite some scheduling madness and an impressive consuite that somehow never seemed to have any food, I had a blast. Years back, I thought of conventions as a business thing. As a new author, it was something I should do in order to network and sell a few books. These days, it's the people first and foremost that draw me back. Don't get me wrong, I was happy to hear that Larry Smith had sold a bunch of my books. Mostly though, Penguicon just had an awful lot of nifty people. My biggest regret is I didn't get enough time to spend with them all.

Most of my pics didn't turn out well. But I got a few fun shots, which are posted behind the cut for the photo haters out there.

Catherynne Valente & Jim Hines, Crushers of Souls

Elizabeth Bear reads The Stepsister Scheme.

Dan Hogan ([info]danieljhogan). Author. Ghostbuster. Podcaster. Owner of nifty hats.

Award-winning author Mary Robinette Kowal gives a highly dramatic reading of her water bottle, while Sarah Monette ([info]truepenny) looks on.

It sounds like you had a great time. That's what cons are for.
Cheers,

Yep. Pretty exhausted today, but that's normal. Definitely planning to go back to this one in 2010.

Man, the north east SUCKS for cons... weeps! That's it.. I'm moving in with you and your family!

Sounds good! I can promise our rental rates will be far more reasonable than you find in NY. Your commute to work might be a bit annoying, though...

I don't know about your area, but Boston has three good-sized cons each year: Arisia (probably closest to Penguicon in flavor), Boskone, and Readercon. (Okay, that one's in Burlington rather than Boston or Cambridge, but it's still fairly easy to get there.)

Will there be a podcast of "The Life and Times of One Lonely Water Bottle"?

Curious minds wanna know...

Wow. This was clearly the con I should have attended this year. Every report I read makes it sound like a blast.

This one felt very much like a blur, a "blink and it's over" convention. Busy and nonstop, but a great deal of fun.

Ok, is it wrong for me to be all squeeing to see so many of 'my' authors in one place?

'cos I'm TOTALLY squeeing about it (and wish we could have been there).

Squeeing is fine, and hey, there's always 2010 :-)

I have a feeling that most of this group will also end up at the 2010 World Fantasy Con in Columbus. There is no way we are missing that con. :)

Glad everything went well for you. It was a very good time, even if it seemed tactically rough in spots. My biggest regret is that I spent no time with Elizabeth Bear or John Scalzi. I'm glad we had even the small chance we had to talk on Friday.

Decently well, although I was exhausted by the end of the FuMP show. Frank and I had a lot of fun on Sunday. (I saw you in the hall, but you were On The Way To Somewhere, so I didn't bug you.)

Thanx for posting everybody's LJ handle for easy blog-finding. You rock. But you knew that. :)

You're welcome! And thank you for taking so many pictures that didn't suck, to make up for the 90% of mine that did :-)

Definitely a fun con! I'm annoyed I didn't start going sooner. (I showed up for a day last year, but that was my first time at Penguicon.)

It was nice to say hi and wave at Penguicon. I doubt you know which waving person matches this name--I'll have to re-introduce myself at the next con. Or perhaps Kerrytown Bookfest in Ann Arbor.

On LJ, how do we do the nifty thing where I mention your name in my entry (which I did) and have your LJ address show up?
[info]controuble wrote:

You can make the LJ tag by using open-angle-bracket "lj user=", open quotes, the user name, close quotes, close-angle-bracket like this < lj user= "jimhines" >, but no spaces next to the angle brackets.

Hi Laurie,

Yep. I recognize some faces, and I remember some of the names, but my brain sucks when it comes to connecting the two. Sorry about that :-P

By all means, the next time please throw something at me to get my attention and feel free to come chat!

Glad to hear you had such a good time. I am too broke from having to replace my well pump and a few other things to do any out-of-state cons this year. Hope you're planning on coming to Windy so I can see you again.
[info]jimhines wrote:

I'm planning on it. Windycon is another favorite, and as a bonus, the next book comes out in October. So October-December will probably be a lot of book-promoting craziness for me :-)

Sympathies on the financial trouble. I hope your home stays fixed.

Likewise!

Sadly, I don't tend to travel that much outside the immediate Michigan range, so I've missed out on meeting a lot of cool folks. Someday, as budget and family permit, I hope to remedy this.

I swear to you I hear more about Scalzi than I would have ever thought possible for someone who has no freaking idea who he is. Of course I read Wil Wheaton's blog so go figure, but the guy has great press from what I can tell.

Oh, and I got to pull apart a page of Stepsister on my blog. I'm glad I had it close at hand!

Now you've got me wanting to reread that page. I will say that "asked" is basically the same as "said" in terms of its invisibility. Questions get asked, statements are said, and nobody notices either unless you go overboard.

Scalzi ... he's definitely got some things going for him. Very outgoing, with enough of an ego to make himself noticed without generally crossing over into annoying/obnoxious. He's got presence, if that makes sense. And he's big enough on the Internet to get noticed and talked about when he does something random like the bacon cat thing years ago.

bacon cat? Now you have me wanting to use my google-fu on that one!

You see? You see how the man lures you in with his devious bacon plans?

http://whatever.scalzi.com/2006/09/13/clearly-you-people-thought-i-was-kidding/

Actually, he mentioned this weekend feeling pretty burnt-out on the whole bacon thing. Apparently now everyone e-mails him anything bacon-related, and it gets a little old.

Looks like you had a great time Jim! Guess what I found in my mailbox today? My sis FINALLY sent me the stepsister scheme book that you autographed....perhaps 10 years ago??? I've tried very hard not to make sarcastic comments about her on my blog, but I might have sent her birthday gift a day later just to get back at her. Plus, I think she read it before she sent it on to me. That would have been just like her. Actually, it would be just like me too. Anyways, I'm looking forward to curling up with some kick-butt girlies this week! ;)
Cheers,

Heh. I totally had this moment earlier in the con before the party, thinking "Wait, did we invite Jim? Does he know?" But Scalzi was right there so I couldn't say anything! I was so glad to see you there later!

It was hard to strike the right balance between letting people know and trying So Very Hard not to let the cat out of the bag. At least the surprise worked!
