2009 SF/F Humor Roundup is Live!

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 2:37 PM
Christmas - Snow

Here we go!  This is the link for the 2009 roundup of humorous science fiction and fantasy.  Let this be the first step toward a new age, an age in which humorous books can walk proudly beside their literary brothers and sisters, an age in which puns and nose-picking jokes shall be treated with the respect and accolades they deserve!

http://www.jimchines.com/humor-2009/

If you’ve read some amusing science fiction or fantasy from this year, please let me know and I’ll add it to the list!

If you’ve written something funny, same deal–but please note that I’m only listing work that appeared in paid/commercial publications.  And no, that $1.00 advance from Publish America doesn’t count.

Finally, if you have feedback on the page itself, please let me know.  This is a work in progress, and will probably evolve as it goes.

Please feel free to spread the word to anyone you think might be interested, and thanks!

The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood. ;-)

Silly boy. Atwood has made it very clear she doesn't write SF.

That's what makes the book funny. :D

Well, the Tom Holt I'm reading now is 2008. Does he have anything out this year? Be worth checking . . .

I've read "Monster" by Martinez. Weird Book. Weird. But yeah, it belongs on the list and was a solid, good read. I thought his Automatic Detective was an even better book--it made *my* top reads of 2008 (not quite a nebula, but I'm sure if he noticed he was completely overcome and thrilled.)

I shall have to think more about this topic. I haven't read as much this year so there won't be too much to go through. Possibly Simon Haynes? I don't know if he had a release this year; I've only read the first couple in the Hal Spacejock series. And are these awards US published only?? I know. You said something about that somewhere else...

Hm ... okay, let's not worry about US-only for the moment, but I may include a note for non-US works, since I believe that affects the award eligibility.

How about Nancy Fulda's short story Hexes and Tooth Decay?

Published at Darwin's Evolution:

GREAT Story.

She had another story with them earlier this year. I'll have to hunt it down. I know I really liked it...but I'm pretty sure it wasn't funny. I'll check.

Should I be doing my own writing?? Yes. But here are some FAVORITES from 2009, all from www.towndrunkmag.com:

Squeak by Amanda Davis Sept 09
Super Hero, Uncensored K.J. Kabza - * Excellent--My personal Favorite* Jan 09
The God of Laundry Tom W. Burke Feb 09
A Natural History of the Pancake Badger Matthew Bey *Hysterical* March 09

There are some other ones and I haven't read the November issue yet.

Now, I must get to work.

Are these all short stories, or do any fall into the longer categories?

All are short stories (I believe 5k or under per the guidelines!)

Excellent!

Okay, because I'm already getting overwhelmed on this, can you e-mail me the info and the story links, and I'll get those added? Contact link is on the Humor Roundup page, but I'm pretty sure you have my e-mail address :-)

Thanks!

Zines with frequently humorous specfic content:

Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine - print & pdf

BBT Magazine (Blood, Blade & Thruster) - online (formerly print)

Kaleidotrope - print

These are all paying markets, although a shade under the semi-pro payment scale - not sure where you want to set your cutoff.

As a disclaimer, I should note I'm involved with the first of these (I edited this year's ASIM issue 40), and had hopefully humorous stories in the other two zines:

From ASIM 40:
'Creature Feature', by K. T. McRae
'The Future is Now', by Melissa White
'Kandinsky's Mistakes', by Darren Goossens
'The Easy Way', by Dan McCormack
'Zombies from Mars', by Doug A. Van Belle
'Meet Mary Sue', by K. C. Shaw

In BBT issue 4, there's my story 'Scuttle', and Kaleidotrope issue 6 had my story 'Single Handed'. A sequel of sorts to the Kaleidotrope story, 'The Fall Guy' appeared in the CSFG anthology 'Masques', but I suspect the collection's difficult for non-Australian readers to acquire.

Elsewhere, I really enjoyed Cory Doctorow's 'To Go Boldly' in the Dozois/Strahan anthology 'The New Space Opera 2'. Mike Resnick's 'Catastrophe Baker and A Canticle for Leibowitz', in the same anthology, was also amusing.

And the new Miles Vorkosigan novel ('Cryoburn', by Lois McMaster Bujold) would be a shoe-in, except it's apparently not due out until *next* November...

Okay, I'm torn about ASIM 40. I love ASIM, but I'm worried that if editors are able to nominate their full ToC, this is going to get overwhelming. I've updated the list with the other recs, though. Thanks!

If you're able to squeeze in just one ASIM 40 story, then I'd probably err towards 'Kandinsky's Mistakes'. And I'd also say that the other issues' editors this year (excepting maybe ASIM 42, which isn't yet listed on the website) didn't go so heavily for humorous stories. 'Cockroach Love', by Damien Broderick & Paul di Filippo, in ASIM 41, is funny, but very much not-safe-for-work. And I'd probably add 'Chasing Jormungand', by Shane Jiraiya Cummings, from ASIM 38. There's maybe some recs from ASIM 42, but in terms of humorous stories it'd still end up as a minority of the full ToC, maybe 25-30% of the year's ASIM stories. If that sets your mind at rest, at all...

And pleased to see that someone else mentioned The Town Drunk as another spec-fic humour outlet - I'd neglected that one, but it definitely has some good stuff.

You know, Greg Van Eekhout's Norse Code should probably be on the novel list.

Don't let the UF woman on the cover fool you. That's just to sell books.

Well, how about those of us who might do freelance? I write for helium sometimes, and came up with this earlier in the year: http://www.helium.com/items/1538510-zombieselmocurseprincesstoadchocolatecheesemarriedhappily-ever-aftershow-business (anyway, someone might consider it amusing even if you decide it doesn't fit the bill*G*)

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to have to do some more reading on the Helium site to figure out if that would qualify by my admittedly-vague guidelines for this thing...

LOL, yeah I wasn't sure. I do/did get paid for what I write there, though it's in a sort of contiguous loop -- I guess like small royalties in a way, though don't quote me there. Anyway figured you might like it.

I don't have a paid work...but you mentioned wanting to hear filk before...BWAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH!

To the tune of "Kiss the Girl". To be visualized with the dancing seafood and as sung by the lobster.

Silly little motorcycler,
Acting like you own the road,
You don't got a lot of brain,
But there's something about you...
And we don't know why
You're trying to fly,
But you're going to ...kiss the road!

You want road rash.
Look at road, you know you do.
It's possible she wants you, too.
There is one way to ask her.
It don't take a word,
Not a single word,
Go on and kiss the road!
