Happy Goblin Day!

Today marks the official release of Goblin Tales, an electronic collection of five goblin-related short stories, available for $2.99 for Kindle and Nook.

Purchase links: Amazon, Amazon.uk, B&N
Coming soon: Kobo, iBooks, Lulu (print edition)

So why should you rush out RIGHT THIS INSTANT to plunk down your hard-earned lunch money for this book? Here are ten reasons in no particular order.

1. Goblins are stereotyped as one-dimensional villains, low-level obstacles to be slaughtered by so-called heroes on their way to the “real” quest. By buying this book, you help fight harmful anti-goblin rhetoric.

2. In keeping with traditional goblin humor, one of the stories features what can best be described as a “tactical diaper.”

3. Gay Fire Spider Fights to Save Science Fiction Convention! Yes, this is an actual story in the collection.

4. If this one sells well, I’ll be much more likely to do other e-releases.

5. Daniel Ernle’s wonderful cover art.

6. The fifth story was the seed for my current project, Libriomancer, meaning you get a taste of what’s to come in another year or two.

7. Pat Rothfuss has talked about buying the rights to Firefly and putting it back on the air. Well, if I make enough money off of Goblin Tales, I’ll buy the rights to The Muppet Show and bring that back!

8. If both Pat and I succeed? Muppet/Firefly Crossover, baby!

9. Lots of nice people have said lots of nice things about my goblin stuff.

10. The book is DRM-free, and I turned off regional and lending restrictions when I posted it for sale.

If any goblin fans would care to spread the word, I’d be much obliged. Cover art is available in small and large.

I’ll be posting announcements and maybe a contest or two on Twitter and Facebook as well, and will probably be talking more about the book, the process, and the numbers later this week.

I agree with this in princple, but after the amount of time I've spent on typesetting, cover art tweaking (gotta make sure the spine starts on precisely the right pixel!), and everything else...

Ah well. It will be wonderful when it's finally done, of course! And the price wasn't quite as bad as I expected. I think it will be about $8 to buy direct from Lulu.

Now, to figure out which of these my eReader can read. (I have a Kobo, but I think I've put Barnes and Noble books on it before...)

You'll be wanting the ePub format, then. Which is B&N. I believe the Kobo has no problem reading B&N-formatted ePubs.

Congrats!

I lack an e-reader so I'm very much looking forward to the lulu version....even though it sounds like it's a bear to create.

That is all.

Thanks! And what reader do you have? I'm told Kobo can read B&N's epub files, and I suspect others might be able to. I'm still trying to sort out what can read what.

Fair enough, and thank you :-)

I don't have enough to buy the Muppets yet, but I could probably afford a ping pong ball and some felt. It's the first step toward Kermit, right?

Done and done. Now to go grab my Nook so I can download it over the WiFi.

Happy Ides of Goblin Day! (or something--I'm not terribly witty just now...)

Thank you!

I posted a comment on Jig's Twitter feed about how no goblin would ever let his friends get close enough to stab him in the back like that Caesar guy...

Hi, Jim. Downloaded my copy a couple of minutes ago for my Kindle. Love the cover! No clickable table of contents, though?

Small fly in an otherwise much anticipated ointment.

Mar. 15th, 2011 07:42 pm (UTC)
That's a Kindle "feature," unfortunately. However, I built clickable links into the copyright page that will serve as a makeshift TOC to take you to each story.

The alternative was to hand-code a separate TOC, which would then result in two separate TOCs for anyone not getting the Kindle version. Though I suppose I could have prepared two separate .epub files, one for Amazon (where they don't use the built-in TOC) and one for everyone else...

I'm trying to imagine what would happen if "Pigs in Space" had a close encounter with "Serenity." Would Ms. Piggy finally have met her match with River Tam? God, the fanfic concept hurts my brain, but I'd love to read what happened if someone actually made it work. Suddenly I'm imagining Kermit and Mal sitting around complaining about the burdens of leadership over a couple of beers. Hey, Muppets/Firefly/Cheers cross over!

Loved the trilogy...
...so I'm going to buy this later today.

Can't go wrong for $2.99.

And I'll blog about it this afternoon. :-)

Can't wait!
