Book Giveaway: Goblins or Libriomancer

About two weeks ago, I received my author copies of the Science Fiction Book Club editions of Libriomancer and The Legend of Jig Dragonslayer.

This makes me happy for lots of reasons. Many of the books on my shelves came from the SFBC, back when I was younger and there was no way I could afford full-priced hardcovers. And then I found the SFBC. Five free books at sign-up? Reduced-price omnibus editions? Sweet! This is how I first discovered authors like Robert Asprin, Fred Saberhagan, Anne McCaffrey, Ursula LeGuin, even Asimov and his Foundation Trilogy.

So I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate this milestone, my first books to make it into the club, with a giveaway. And since the stress-o-meter has been running rather high lately, I’m gonna go with something happy and hopefully simple for this one.

All you have to do is leave a comment and tell me about one of the best things that happened to you in 2012.

I’ll pick one commenter at random next week and send them an autographed copy of the SFBC edition of either Libriomancer or The Legend of Jig Dragonslayer. Their choice.

This isn’t a U.S.-only contest, so anyone can enter.

I still have SFBC books on my shelves from when I was a teenager -- including many of the authors you named, above! :)

In 2012 I had the opportunity to be part of a parent focus group held at ARC-MI regarding alternative assessments for kids with IEPs in high school. It was a Good Thing.

(I also got to meet you and watch my son get all over geeky meeting you. :) That was pretty cool, too!)

Congrats Jim!
Congrats Jim! I too loved SFBC as a teen.

One of my best things for 2012 was writing 2.5 novels! (Does that count as more than one thing?)

Maybe not the best, but certainly in the top three, was going to Naperville to hear Terry Pratchett talk about his book Dodger.

And congratulations to you!

Congratulations! I have some SFBC editions! now I patronize the library instead. Jig the Goblin no longer graces their shelves :(

Best thing in 2012 - joining a writer's critique group. My novel is progressing at a chapter a week instead of a chapter a month. Yay.

Man, I loved getting stuff from SFBC. I know I have some books packed that I got from there.

Mm...best thing in 2012? Nothing is standing out for me, unfortunately. Trying to get my stuff together for 2013.

Easy, best thing was the birth of my Son. (2nd child)

I still have many of the books I got when younger from SFBC.

The best thing to happen to me in 2012? It's kind related to the worst thing to ever happen to me. I lost my mother, but with that I was able to become debt free for the first time ever!

Congratulations to you, Jim. I still have hopes of meeting you in person one day!

One of the best things that happened? I have a list!

I paid off my student loans.
I paid off our house.
I got to be turned into a character, Herald-Trainee Finny, in Redoubt by Mercedes Lackey.
I got to meet and talk with Misty at WFC2012 in Toronto.

All balance by my mother's death a year ago last Sunday, but still, I had some awesome stuff happen last year v

I was going to say the best thing that happened to me in 2012 was getting married, but getting a box with over 70 minuature dinosaurs (meant to be boutonnieres) is competing for the first spot.

The best thing in 2012?

Being kissed (etc, etc) by someone for the first time in 10 years (I broke up with my previous boyfriend a few months before turning 30, in 2002, and I turned 40 in 2012; apparently, I'm not generally inclined to casual stuff) and falling in love with the guy.

(unfortunately, this also led to the worst thing of 2012, which was being dumped quite unexpectedly by the same guy in early December, which I'm still not quite over - but still, I'm counting the overall thing as a positive, most of the time)

Achievement: I deadlifted 500# for the first time.

Reward: Felicia Day ogled me in front of a panel at Dragon*Con.

Same-sex marriage having finally become legal in my state, I eloped. My wife and I were married in the park we had our first date in, next to the conservatory I proposed in front of. We ran off to a cozy little B&B for the weekend. Best thing that's happened to me in years.

It doesn't seem that way at first, but one of the best things to happen to me in 2012 was getting laid off from the Day Job. Sure, money is tighter now, but I have so much more time for writing and the wife and I were able to revisit where we spent our honeymoon for Christmas/Wife's Birthday/New Years.

*grateful hug* It's so rare for a giveaway to include everyone. Thank you.

And congratulations on your big milestone!

2012 was a bit of a tough one, but the 2 things I'm most grateful for are (a) keeping my job during a series of layoffs, and (b) my best friend holding his own in his fight against cancer.

One of the best things was finally moving to a new apartment.

Lots of good stuff happened, but the most obvious one is that both my son and I left the ranks of the unemployed.

Best thing to happen in 2012?

I got rid of a toxic relationship and took a step on the long path to actually healing. It's going to be a long, hard road but I've stepped on it, and that's what counts.

One of the best things that happened to me in 2012 was getting to clamber all over the radio telescope at Arecibo.

Congrats on the SFBC editions! I really love that they do omnibuses.

Fond memories of the SFBC here, too. :) Sometime I'm signing back up, when I have time to read all the books I will undoubtedly buy :)
Let's see, 2012 rocked for me. I think I'm finally feeling reliably happy (haven't been there since I was 17, so, not sure what it looks like). I lost 30 lbs. and we went to Disney World, so it's hard to pick one thing.

Best thing to happen on 2012 was when my 1 year old son stopped teething and finally slept through the night. 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep...it was glorious. :D
