Sigh…

Ever spend several hours on a blog post, only to have WordPress eat it?

When I *glanced* at this, I thought it was a post by another "Jim" I read, whose posts are never longer than a sentence or two. You can imagine my surprise that he'd spent hours on those sentences!

Sorry to have lost your wise words! Bad Wordpress! No Cookie!

On the bright side, a lot of that time was spent researching, and I've still got all those links in my history. So it shouldn't take as long to recreate the post.

Wordpress has never betrayed me (yet), but LJ has many times over the years.

Not Wordpress specifically. Various other webpage forms, though ... x_x

That's why I always write my posts in Word first.

(Not to mention some of the historical blogposts take more than one day to write.)

And compose it in /dropbox, preferably.

When writing short posts in an online box, may I recommend that Post become Ctl-A,C, then Post?

Yep, I do that for shorter posts. Most of the time. But the one time I forget, whatever evil site I'm on will eat the post, or my old computer decides to freeze the browser out of some old man's mischief. Though I do like him still, or I would use the laptop only.

I use Notepad, partly because Word is a memory-intensive app and partly because "smart quotes" mess up too often even these days.

Lol, I'm one of the ten people in Germany who has neither a cell phone, smart phone, ipad or whatever else there's around smaller than a computer or my Lenovo laptop (which I mostly use when writing on the balcony). :-D

Maybe it's because I grew up without internet (yep, I'm on the wrong side of 50), so I don't need it 24/7 even now.

No, but probably only because I've never used it.

Back in my day we blamed it on Shub-Internet.

YES. This is why the Lazarus browser extension is my best best friend.

Agreed, Lazarus (for Firefox, in my case) is such a lifesaver I've paid money to the creator. (It remembers and ressurects what you have typed.)

Yup.

Which is why these days I always draft entries in a text editor (save! frequently!) before cutting and pasting into the browser interface to the blog.

Wise words, Autopope. That's what I do, too. And back up everything! Some day, when I least expect it, my computer will die....

Aw. :( See, this is why I type up all of mine in Notepad first.
