My e-mail locked up at home last night, then gave up and died. Oddly enough, I was excited about this, because it meant Tom Smith, filk singer extraordinaire, had e-mailed me the MP3 of "The Song of Jig" (from Goblin Hero [Amazon | Mysterious Galaxy]).

We had tried to catch up before, at Context, but that didn't happen. Then at Windycon, we were supposed to meet up on Saturday, and I blew that. But I bumped into him on Sunday, and he dropped what he was doing to make sure this happened.

You want to know what skill means? He set up his equipment, glanced at the lyrics, strummed a few chords, and played the song. No rehersal, just bam. (Okay, he got to practice the first few verses, because someone walked past and the breeze knocked the lyrics askew.) As someone who needs months of practice to play a recognizable song on piano, my envy bubbled over a bit at that point.

Anyway, enough introductory babble. Here you go, the 4 MB MP3 file of "The Song of Jig": http://www.sff.net/people/jchines/Jig.mp3

Please feel free to spread the link to anyone who might appreciate it.

It's supposed to be a goblin song, so the details aren't quite true to life. But it does contain a few potential spoilers for those of you who haven't yet read Goblin Quest [Amazon | Mysterious Galaxy].

I left Windycon a very happy man. I also picked up one of Tom's albums. He writes some seriously funny stuff. I've had "House at Cthulhu Corner" stuck in my head for days. Once you've listened to Jig, swing by his site and check out some of his freebies. Then go buy a CD.

I love The Song of Jig! Now you need to think about sending it out as a single into the stores.

I was thinking about using it for background music at my signing tomorrow night :-)

Actually, Jig hates that song! Every time the goblins sing it, they expect him to do something heroic...

That was awesome.

Isn't it, though? I love it!

Wow thats awesome. ^_^
Now I have the song stuck in my head! I'm going to be humming it on the subway and people will look at me funny.

Gosh, I'm sorry about that ... I certainly didn't plan and hope for that precise thing to happen to all who listened ;-)

Thats alright. I'm quite used to it by now. At least I have such a good song stuck in my head this time around. ^_^

Tom Smith is made of win. I got to see him at the last con I was able to attend.

A friend of mine suggested him when I was talking about trying to do this. I caught his concert at Context and loved it. I've always concentrated on the writing tracks at conventions, and I'm thinking I've missed out by not getting to some of the filk events.

I'd go listen but ... you know what happened to you connection? Same would happen to me in the land o' dial-up. Still, sounds very fun!

I understand. I'd have had a heck of a time getting it if I hadn't been able to download at work. (Don't tell anyone!)

'Twas much fun. Tom's a highly entertaining character.

I'm so glad you caught Tom at a good time, finally.

When I saw him at OVFF he was looking *so* much more awake than he was at Context (well, duh! -- he hadn't just driven across Texas) and I since I knew you would both be at Windycon I was *hoping* it would work out this time. And it DID. Yay! :)

Yup! Life is good :-)

Whoot! :-)
I shall have to put this on my iPod *grin*
I can see it turning into a serious earworm . . . .
There's a LOT of wonderful filk out there and usually filk being sold in the dealers room at any con (as well as the usual live filk.)

Half of Tom's songs seem to earworm their way into my brain for days at a time. But I'd love it if this one did the same for people :-)

So does your encouragement of promotion and comments on wanting to get to filk a bit more combine into allowing others to perform this in circles? Attributed, of course :)
I liked this when i read it...and even moreso having heard it...and think it needs to spread a bit *grin*

Thanks for asking! Consider this official permission to perform "The Song of Jig" whenever and wherever you please.

If it's at a con I'll be attending, let me know so I can swing by and catch the performance!

Also, nice icon ;-)

er, should've been a bit more specific as *I* don't actually perform :) I'm a Filk Appreciator & Filk PusherEncourager *grin*

So would be more likely to grab my friends that know the base tune, hand over the lyrics, and go "please?" while smiling a lot :)
But will SO definitely let you know (*pssst* Capricon is Feb 14-17, Chicagoland)
