A Rare Saturday Post, with Sucker Tree

I don't post much on weekends, but what the heck.

First off, the Ask an Author thread is still open, and has almost hit 100 comments. I've always been one of those people who likes seeing the numbers roll over, so I need five more people to go ask questions. Serious or silly, it's all good. (And there are some entertaining ones already in there.)

I've said before that balancing job, family, and writing is a bit of a trick. It's why I get most of my writing done at work (except for days like yesterday, when the office goes out to lunch ... which was fun, but I felt a bit torn about my poor unfinished story.) Then when I get home, I usually get time to do a little e-mail and catch up online, but sometimes a more important deadline comes along. Like my daughter's Christmas party. My daughter who needed a sucker tree to bring to class the next day.

So here's how I spent Thursday night.

Considering we had no idea how to do this when we started out, I'm pretty pleased with myself.

I also wanted to congratulate the folks who have made the preliminary Nebula ballot. I see some familiar names on the list, including beth_bernobich, norilana, Julie Czerneda, and some lady named Rowling. If you're in SFWA, there's only a week and change left to get your nominations in. They especially need nominations in the novella category.

But don't make any more novelette recs, okay*? "Sister of the Hedge" made the list, and I'm already feeling intimidated by my competition.

*Yes, I'm kidding. Mostly. And I fully expect Beth to whoop me :-)

For a second there I thought you meant sucker tree like "Haha your stuck with it, sucker!" Sort of a Charlie Brown tree. ^_^

I'm sure any ambiguity in the phrase was completely unintentional :-)

Sucker Tree: I'd thought of something rather more vicious, maybe out of Xanth, like maybe a tree full of lampreys.

That's closer to my visualization as well. Something with octopoid tentacles for branches, maybe...

Tentacles are always in style...

Thanks! It's one of those things where I have no expectation of actually winning, but it's cool just to be on the list!

Did the tree have anything to do with this?

We sang it when I was in elementary school.

Nope. This was purely for the candy :-)

Candy's a plenty good reason. Or a Good & Plenty reason, or something.

Are you gonna come by the house to pick it up? Delivery is extra, you know.

Also, happy birthday!!!

I'll ignore that you'd charge me extra for delivery if you post a snappy happy birthday comment on my myspace page. it'll make me feel popular. :)

and yes, next time i'm in the lansing area, i expect my sucker tree to be ready to go!

Sister of the Hedge
Just read that in the antho. Fabulous. I meant to tell you earlier. I would vote for it. Are associates allowed to vote?

Re: Sister of the Hedge
Sadly, I believe you have to be an active (full) member to vote. But thank you -- I'm glad you liked it! I was pretty proud of that one...

I like your sucker tree! My son is pretty much past the stage where we help him with school projects, but oy, do I remember those days. Sewing a costume to make him look like Christopher Columbus was either the high point or the nadir. Not sure which.

And congrats to you, young man.

Thanks! Generally, my wife is better at the school projects than I am, but it was kind of fun to put the engineering brain to work to figure out how the heck to make a workable tree for this one.

Congrats to you as well, my most honorable and skilled competition ;-)

Yeah, I was totally expecting a Charlie Brown tree, but that's very cute.
