Stepsisters: Unleashed

It's here. Today marks the official release of The Stepsister Scheme [Amazon | Mysterious Galaxy].

For months, I've been thinking about what I should blog today. I remember back in 2004 at Windycon, talking to some friends about this killer idea I had to take three fairy tale princesses and turn them into a Charlie's Angels type team, saving the prince and fighting the witches and evil fey and generally kicking ass. And now it's a book. With pages and words and everything :-)

So what do you post on book day? When Goblin Quest came out from Five Star in November of '04, I did a contest where all you had to do is mention the book in your blog, and you were entered to win. It worked, kind of ... but looking back, I'm not sure how comfortable I feel about that. It feels like I was buying people's support. This is probably my own neurosis, but I'm not going to do that again.

My friend jpsorrow did a nifty cut/paste banner for his book The Vacant Throne [Amazon | Mysterious Galaxy] (which also comes out today!) I thought about stealing his idea doing something similar, but decided to go a different route.

I'm just going to make this a request. Some time over the next week or so, if you've read the book, or if you've read the preview, or if you just like the cover, or you just think kick-ass princesses are a cool idea, please spread the word. Tell a friend. Post a review. Mention the book on your blog. And when you do, say why you think it's worth checking out. Word-of-mouth is one of the most powerful factors when it comes to a book's success.

My thanks to those of you who have already done so. I very much appreciate it.

If you choose to mention the book, here are a few links that might be helpful:

At this point, things are pretty much out of my hands. I wrote the book and turned in the final revisions over a year ago. I've arranged some signings and interviews, created some icons, sent out extra ARCs, ran some contests, and done everything I could squeeze into my schedule ... I think I'm ready to let go now. I'm a control freak, so I don't want to let go, but it's time*.

Thanks to all of you who've stuck with me so far. That's probably the most important thing to say. Thank you for your support, your encouragement, your enthusiasm, and your willingness to put up with me on cranky rant days ;-)

I love this book. I love these characters and their stories. I hope you will too.

*This does not mean I'm through posting princess updates. I've got some Amazon gift certificates, so I'll probably be giving away a few more copies of Stepsister. And if there's other excitement (like when I finally get to see the German cover for this book), you'd better believe I'll be sharing it.

Thanks :-) And thank you for your comments and feedback, back when this was just a painfully rough manuscript!

Happy Book Day!

I think next time, I just need to put in to get the day off of work. Trying to focus on the day job has been nuts!

I should be working on Red Hood right now (lunch break), but I suppose I can allow myself a little time to do Stepsister stuff :-)

I know exactly what you mean. Don't tell Joshua, but I didn't pay for my copy of The Skewed Throne either ;-) But I assuaged my guilt by posting a nice review for him, so that works, right?

The Charlie's Angels thing was very deliberate on the cover. And I love the job Scott Fischer did on the artwork. I don't know what I did to deserve it, but I've had tremendous cover luck so far.

Why wait? :-)

Amazon usually tries to time it so that books show up on release day ... at least, that's my understanding. I hope it gets there soon!

Happy Book Day!

Purchased it via my Kindle just moments ago. Now I've turned on wireless, and yep - there it is, waiting to be read on my break and lunch.

Didn't even have to drive to the store. :D

I'm loving the fact that this one is available for Kindle! I'm so glad DAW is doing more with e-books.

Hey, I just remembered -- the e-book edition of Goblin War comes out today too. One more release for me to be freaking out about! :-)

Congratulations, guy! I'll likely pick up my copy at PenguiCon so you can sign it (I'd do it at 'Fusion, but I won't be there). Or maybe I'll just head out to Borders this afternoon....
Jan. 6th, 2009 05:19 pm (UTC)
No Fusion this year? Well, dang. But I'll definitely catch up with you at Penguicon, then!

Happy book day, dude! I'm looking forward to reading it! :D
Jan. 6th, 2009 05:19 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I hope you like it! I've been pushing this story for so long, I'm terrified the actual book is going to be a letdown for folks :-P

According to UPS my copy is apparently in Cincinnati at the moment, making it's way here tomorrow.

Looking forward to it!

Unless some UPS employee decides they want to take a reading break.

About 200 of my Stepsister Scheme bookmarks got lost when the envelope was torn open, so you never know -- there could be a lot of eager princess fans working in the shipping business :-)

rarelylynne loved it. It's the next book on my TBR pile. :)

Awesome! Thank you!

Congrats, Jim! Another hard-won victory over the forces of... um... not writing!
Jan. 6th, 2009 05:25 pm (UTC)
Actually, I'm totally blowing my lunch-hour writing time to do Stepsister stuff. LJ and other updates, and all that. So the forces of Not Writing Fiction are totally kicking my ass today.

Hurray! Saw it at the Borders in Niles (OH) last weekend.
Jan. 6th, 2009 05:49 pm (UTC)
Glad to know it's out there, especially in the Borders stores. (Their orders seemed a little lower than B&N this time around, from what little I've gathered.)

::Shrug:: You get two authors with books coming out on the same day, you're probably going to see some overlap.

Hi! You don't know me or anything, but when I saw this book at http://whatever.scalzi.com, I got so damn excited I nearly abandoned my baby daughter in the house to go out and buy the book. (I contained myself, but barely.)

Anyway, I posted about it at my site and on my lj. (www.filamena.com)

I can't wait to read this, man, thank you for writing it!
Jan. 6th, 2009 06:54 pm (UTC)
Thank you! (And thank you also for not abandoning your daughter. I don't need that kind of guilt as an author ;-)

I hope you enjoy it!

Sent in my review to SF Site--plan to mention the book when I talk about some other novels I've been reading. (I figure, doing it right away is counterproductive--a whole lot of mentions of something spamming everyone's list causes skimming, at least it does to me) but posts, esp with content, can catch the eye that might otherwise have skimmed.

Thanks, Sherwood! And I know what you mean. I remember when Joss Whedon's "Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog" came out, and it seemed like every other post in the blogosphere was about Dr. Horrible.

I know the joint contest I'm doing with a few other authors seems to have done that -- we posted the same day, which means some people got the same thing 3-4 times in a row. Looking back, that was probably a mistake on our part...
