1. There's no modest way to say this. Go check out Mysterious Galaxy's list of bestselling titles for January. Don't worry, I'll wait :-)

2. jaylake on succeeding as a writer:

What every one of those people has in common is not any particular superpower. What they have in common is psychotic persistence. Almost all successful writers exhibit behaviors which would be unhealthy perseveration in the everyday world, but are critical success factors in publishing. More >>
3. Did taxes last night. I'd set aside enough for federal taxes, but forgot about the state. The writing income boosted me just past the income level where we'd get a nice property tax credit, so all told, it looks like we owe about $6000. Note to writers -- as you start to succeed, make sure you're tucking some of that income aside for taxes! April 15 is going to hurt either way, but at least you won't have to sell a kidney.

4. Congrats to Paul Melko (paulmelko) on the release of The Walls of the Universe [Amazon | Mysterious Galaxy]. Paul and I were chatting at ConFusion, trying to figure out whether my Lindsay-power was a match for all the nibbles he's been getting from Hollywood. Paul's a tough opponent, but I think I can take him if Lindsay, Meghan, and Miley combine into a Voltran-style superstar. And now I'm just getting silly. So, um, go check out the first five chapters on his web site.

5. I'll be signing books at Borders in Ann Arbor (the Arborland store, 3527 Washtenaw Ave.) this Saturday at 3:00 pm. I created a Facebook event, but forgot to invite anyone until just now. D'oh! But if you're in the AA area, please consider yourself invited!

6. To celebrate the Mysterious Galaxy news, I think I should give away another book. Any suggestions for how we should pick the next winner of an Amazon-delivered copy of The Stepsister Scheme [Amazon | Mysterious Galaxy]?

Aren't you doing quarterly estimated taxes?

I will be for 2009. But 2008 is the first year I've ever owed taxes. Every year up until this one I got a refund. And then Germany sold lots and lots of goblin books, which is a good thing, but it drastically changed the tax situation.

#6: Have people send you a joke. Then select the funniest joke (either your choice or by polling) and the person who submitted it wins the book. At the very least, you should get some laughs out of the contest.

Thank you for the link to the Jay Lake blog post. I needed that today. Tempting as it is to believe in writerly superpowers, persistence will get you farther.

Thank you for the invitation to Saturday's signing. I will be there with as many members of my posse as I can bring.

Hopefully this signing will be blizzard-free!

And yep, I think stubbornness is probably one of the most important traits for a writer. "Psychotic persistence" sums it up really well :-)

Congratulations! You're #1! You're #1.

:)

I don't have any ideas for good contests, but I'll consider further.

I get a cryptic message from Mysterious Galaxy:
Sorry, unable to access site!

HOSTNAME : mg.booksense.com:80

Mysterious indeed! I'll just assume it's good news. ;-)

Odd. The link comes up for me, albeit slowly.

Stepsister Scheme was their bestselling mass market paperback for January :-)

One of my first nonfiction pieces was just a list of all the little neuroses writers collect. I still say the best thing I ever did as a writer was to marry a licensed counselor.

Have fun at the signing. Wish I could attend. I've got to attend my youngest daughter's volleyball tournament.
