Looking Back

I vaguely recall coming across something like this before. Don't know if it was a meme or just a random entry, but what the heck. Feel free to play along if you're so inclined.

1 year ago ... I was starting to freak out about the release of Goblin War, and griping about the upcoming SFWA elections. (Ironic, that last one...)

5 years ago ... I had been married four whole months, and was still trying to figure out how grown-up relationships were supposed to work. Fortunately, my new wife was very patient. My daughter was only three, but still highly cute. Goblin Quest had just sold to Five Star, a small press. I still had long hair at this point.

10 years ago ... I was finishing up my Masters degree in English and finding creative ways to mess up my romantic relationships. By this time I had gotten the phone call from Writers of the Future (yay!), but novel publication was still a dream. I had just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

20 years ago ... I was in ninth grade, and despising it. (Some might say Jig's treatment in the goblin lair draws a lot from my experience in Junior High School. Fortunately, my life improved the next year.) I was still doing Boy Scouts, though I was starting to withdraw. I think I was planning to be a psychologist at this point.

30 years ago ... I was almost five. I had just gotten glasses the year before. (Click for photographic proof of my early geekiness.) My family had moved to Michigan. Excitement included catching grasshoppers and toads in our lawn. I think I would have been in pre-school. Ironically, my pre-school teacher was the same woman who would teach my daughter many years later.

40 years ago ... was 5 years Before Jim.

Things are amazing when you look back on your life from current back. Who would've guessed the directions your life has taken? I think I'll do one on my blog. Thanks for the retro.

It was kind of fun! Also a little scary what you can find looking back on the Internet.

Best of all, it saved me from having to come up with a more thoughtful blog entry today ;-)

Cool! (And great photos. I had seen Little!Jim, but Long!Hair!Jim was a new revelation ;^).)

I think I will do this too. Um, when I have time and am not supposed to be doing something else, like work. Ahem.

Oh yes, there was probably about a decade of long-haired hippie Jim :-) And the the hair started falling out, and that look just didn't work as well anymore...

But I've saved hundreds in shampoo and conditioner since the buzz! ;-)

You've come a long way, baby.

It's nice to stop and remember that from time to time. A little scary, too....

You're only 35? Such a spring chicken. *g*

Congrats on the numerous personal and professional successes.

More importantly, you sound happy. I know that blog entries can be deceiving, but your posts are often cheerful, and that is refreshing. I hope they reflect a genuine happiness on your part, because that would be a milestone of achievement.

Thanks, Jim. You know, I feel sterssed a lot, but I'd also say I'm happier these days than I've ever really been. Family and writing can both add to the stress, but they add to the joy as well.

I could do without the new dog chewing up everyone's shoes, though...

There are some guys, it seems, who try to keep the long hair when it starts thinning out. I think the buzz works well for you.

And you're about ten years older than me (I turn 25 at the end of the month). And, I should really go work on the Master's thesis now. This was a neat look back over the years.
Feb. 20th, 2009 02:50 pm (UTC)
Good luck on the thesis! I lucked out big time on that -- since I was doing a Creative Writing concentration, I was able to do a novel for mine :-)

Thanks. It goes to the committee on Monday, so I've been editing my butt off.

Same here, MA in English with a CW concentration. And even though there isn't a single 'fantasy' professor (I don't know if anyone on staff even reads fantasy), I talked enough of them into joining my committee and my thesis is an urban fantasy novel. That amuses me to no end.

Your "40 years ago" has me feeling old. ;)
Feb. 19th, 2009 11:23 pm (UTC)
Sorry about that :-)

I'll survive, ya young whippersnapper. ;)

Great post, BTW.

D'oh, too bad my old journals are all back home. This is a great meme.
Feb. 20th, 2009 12:32 am (UTC)
1) Wow, that's such a brave post! :)
2) Whoops, thought you were a few yrs older than I, not 3 younger. ;-)
3) Yup, the buzz works on you. (Luckily, my long hair still works on me, lol.)

Flower children, anyone? ;>
Feb. 20th, 2009 02:22 am (UTC)
What made you get rid of the hair?
Feb. 20th, 2009 03:12 pm (UTC)
Mostly it was thinning out and just didn't work on me anymore. I also discovered that the buzz works well with my lazy efficient approach to life, as it's quicker to wash and I haven't had to pay for a haircut in years :-)
Feb. 20th, 2009 07:21 pm (UTC)
Okay, I did this one over on my own journal. Thanks for the inspiration... and I know at least one person on my f-list has said they're going to do it, too. :-)

You know, it made me really think about my life, and it solidified a couple of decisions I'd been thinking of regarding changes I'd like to make. Thank you for that, too.

Hehehe. Love the kid pick! ~GoGo
