Mermaid Discussion Post

As requested, here is your more-or-less official discussion thread for The Mermaid’s Madness [Amazon | Mysterious Galaxy].

Because my blog mirrors to different places, I’d suggest going either to LiveJournal or http://www.jimchines.com/2009/10/mermaid-discussion-post/ for the liveliest discussion.

Spoilers ahoy, obviously.

If you haven’t read the book and don’t want to know what happens, stay the heck out of the comments.  Otherwise, all discussion, speculation, and questions* are welcome.

*I might even answer some of ‘em!

first off, my husband is "outraged" that the princesses are getting more books than Jig. He suggests a fourth Jig to balance it out.

About MM. (I'd have the book in front of me to pull references and names out but i lent it to a friend)

I am absolutely in love with this series! I think the new Prince would be good for Talia. To help her learn to trust and perhaps put what was done to her behind her and move on. I am not sure I can see Snow returning Talia's feelings. She seems to enjoy the company of men too much.

Are we going to learn more about Talia's child? I couldn't remember if the child survived, or if you even said so. (My friend has that book too, so i can't go look it up)

If it's any consolation, there's a possibility that Smudge at least might show up in future books. (I haven't yet pitched any new ideas to my publisher, but Smudge would be in one of those ideas.)

Re: Talia's children (twin sons), I'll tell you that Red Hood's Revenge is going to give us a lot more information on Talia's backstory :-)

And thank you!

I love it when I showe up in books.

Speaking of crossovers... Tymalous...? Is the king's healer who I think he is? Or has that already come up, and I'm forgetting?

Excellent question! Sadly, another one I'm not going to answer. Though the physical description seems pretty similar, doesn't it? Hm...

It does ring a few bells. Or not. Wait a minute...

I do hope that we don't end up having the love of a good man "curing" Talia of being a lesbian, because that would imply the rape made her one, and that's not how it works.
Oct. 16th, 2009 06:04 pm (UTC)
I'm generally trying to avoid spoilers for future books here, but that one I'll go ahead and kill. The rape did not turn Talia into a lesbian, and Varisto's magic sword will not turn her back.

In other circumstances, I could see Varisto and Talia being good for one another. But Talia is who she is, and that relationship wouldn't work.

Thank you for that. It matters.
Oct. 16th, 2009 06:09 pm (UTC)
To me as well. Especially since I know Talia's situation in Stepsister could be read in different ways.

Heh. Varisto's "magic sword". (waggles eyebrows)

Gods, you'd think I was thirteen, rather than thrice that.

I wouldn't consider that a spoiler, by the way, and I'd've been massively, massively surprised* if you'd gone there.

*and saddened, but you should write your stories, and not do things the way I want 'em done just because that's how I want 'em done. Not that you don't already know that.

PS Jim, if I step over a line, I am always amenable to correction. Your space, not mine.
Oct. 16th, 2009 06:14 pm (UTC)
No worries, you're fine.

Also, if you're 13 for snickering at the magic sword bit, what does that say about the guy who wrote it?
Oct. 16th, 2009 06:36 pm (UTC)
The sad thing is, when I *was* 13, a comment like that would've elicited from me a blank stare and possibly a "Huh?" Not excessively clueful was I. Probably I'm now making up for lost time. :)

Thank you! I am relieved to hear this. I think, though, that I would like to see some sort of mutual partnership thing going on between Varisto and Talia. Drinking/sparring buddies, if you will, purely platonic.
