I Don’t Know

I don’t know how much e-books should cost.  I’ve read arguments for sliding-scale prices.  I know lots of people don’t want to pay over a certain price.  I don’t have an answer.

I don’t know whether Macmillan’s agency agreement would be better for authors and readers than some other approach.

I don’t know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll pop.

I don’t know whether people are going to love Snow Queen.

I don’t know where I get my ideas.

I don’t know when I’ll be able to post the cover art to Red Hood’s Revenge [B&N | Mysterious Galaxy | Amazon].

I don’t know how long I have before my son stops running up to hug me when I come home from work.

I don’t know if my home has adequate weaponry to protect my family against the zombie uprising.

I don’t know whether I should set Snow Queen revisions aside for a week so I can write up and pitch a new series to DAW.

I don’t know why “Single Ladies” won a Grammy.  (But I think it had something to do with the Chipmunks movie.)

I don’t know why I’m so incredibly bad with names and faces.

I don’t know how Randall Munroe does it.

I don’t know how single parents balance work, kids, and sanity.

I don’t know why the catfish in our aquarium keep dying.

I don’t know why religion is ever worth killing for.

I don’t know if I should create a fan page on Facebook.

I don’t know whether an anime-style Snoopy fighting cat-ninjas would be awesome or terrifying.  ETA: socchan brings the awesome here.

I don’t know where this post came from.  I guess I just thought the Internet would be a slightly better place if people were willing to admit they didn’t know things from time to time.

I don't know why that old REO Speedwagon song "I Do' Wanna Know" is running through my head, but it is.

A facebook fan page could be neat. Just as a place to post news related to your books, events your holding/attending, and contests. As I only add personal friends on facebook a fanpage would be more useful.

Mostly, it comes down to whether or not I have time for one more online site to maintain. I also want to make sure I don't turn into one of those people who's always sending out fan page invites. "Jim C. Hines is a fan of Jim C. Hines, and wants you to be a fan of Jim C. Hines too!"

So it's the sanity piece that gets tossed out the window, then? :-)

My wife's been working late three nights a week this semester between school and work. I can get the kids, do dinner, and keep things under control until she gets home, but it does wipe me out. I have tremendous respect for anyone who does this full time.

"I don’t know if I should create a fan page on Facebook." Probably, if you've the time and desire to do so... we could all be your fans!

I don’t know whether people are going to love Snow Queen. They will. :)

I don’t know if my home has adequate weaponry to protect my family against the zombie uprising. Probably not, but jfargo might know! (And also... weapons only count if you know how to use them!)

I don’t know why the catfish in our aquarium keep dying. I'd have to know more about your tank to hazard a real guess. Off the top of my head, they may need brackish water (some catfish do), or they may be too large for the tank.

This one I'm honestly curious about... which type of catfish do you have?

We had two little panda catfish along with a half-dozen guppies.

I don’t know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll pop.

357. I've proved this a few times.

I don’t know why the catfish in our aquarium keep dying.

I strongly suggest consulting Pruess on this. They are the next best thing to consulting an aquatic biologist.

I don’t know whether I should set Snow Queen revisions aside for a week so I can write up and pitch a new series to DAW.

You probably need the break. Write it up, then hold off on pitching it until Snow Queen is done. That way, when you're done melting your proverbial candle in the smelter, you can go back to that idea and tweak it a bit before pitching it.

I don’t know whether an anime-style Snoopy fighting cat-ninjas would be awesome or terrifying.

YES. Embrace the power of And on this one. Trust me.

Preuss is where we got them, so I'll probably be giving them a call at some point. They survived a while, so I don't think they sold us sick fish, but both catfish died while the guppies are all still going strong.

You're very welcome :-)

I've already got the personal Facebook page. I'm just not sure I want to add the fan page, giving myself yet another online site to maintain. On the other hand, it might be nice to be able to channel more of the promotional stuff over there, letting me go with more of the silliness and personal thoughts/rants on the personal page.

Thank you. I needed this reminder. My husband and I had an argument this morning. I have been keeping informed about the whole Amazon vs Macmillan thing. My husband read an article about it and he started to ask questions that I couldn't answer. Why on earth did Amazon act like this? Was Macmillan the only publisher who wanted more dynamic pricing? I have read everything about it since last Saturday and I just didn't know. And that's ok. Thanks for reminding me.

I still don't understand the details of the agency agreement, or the legal implications, or any of that. I think I've got a rough idea, but there's a lot I'm still trying to wrap my brain around. (Though I maintain my stance that Amazon has been acting like a 3-year-old.)

Most of the comics I read will have clever, insightful, or simply hilarious days. xkcd is the only one that's so consistent about being funny, intelligent, and original. I would love to know how he maintains that week after week.

My old English teacher, Smilin' Bill Novak, always used to say that he could work with the ones who didn't know and knew it, or the ones who didn't know they knew. It was the ones who didn't know and didn't know they didn't know that he just couldn't help.
