My Job Rocks, Part XVIII

For anyone in mid-Michigan, I’ve got a booksigning at pizza party tonight from 6:00 - 8:00 at Schuler Books in Okemos.  (Former Lansing signings have been at the Eastwood location.  If you go to the Eastwood store tonight, I won’t be there, and neither will all of that hot, yummy pizza.)

Any suggestions or requests for what you’d like me to read?

I also wanted thank everyone who’s posted reviews or comments about Red Hood’s Revenge on Amazon, Twitter, blogs, or wherever.  It’s very much appreciated, and I’m glad most of you have been enjoying it.

Not writing-related: my daughter Clara returned last night after a week up north with a friend.  She brought a monarch butterfly chrysalis and a caterpillar who’s about to form another chrysalis.  (She’s always been interested in the bugs.)

I’d never seen a monarch chrysalis before, and I couldn’t photograph the thing, but they’re beautiful.  Light green with metallic gold highlights.  It looks exactly like someone painted gold leaf over the raised ridge and bumps near the top.  Very cool.

Anyway, back to the rocking job.  In the past week, I’ve received books by Stacia Kane (autographed!), Sherwood Smith, and Beth Bernobich, and I should be receiving a copy of Erin Hoffman’s forthcoming novel Sword of Fire and Sea soon as well.  Three of these four books won’t be out for a little while yet, but I get to read them all.  Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha!  I love my job!

OOOOooooo. The shiny. It makes me jealous.

A live chrysalis, right? When it starts to hatch, remember to not "help" the butterfly get out.

Yep. She's done this before, and has a little butterfly habitat where it should be safe. Little brother has already been warned not to touch.

Oh, I hope you enjoy Passion Play as much as I did! So so so so so so good!

Good to know :-) I've been wanting to read it for a while now!

You get pizza party book signings?! That's the best thing ever!!

And it sounds like your daughter is getting the best of nature. I'm a little jealous, all we ever managed to find were silk worm caterpillars that turned into lovely little moths. I would have loved to find a monarch chrysalis or caterpillar as a little girl!

She's done so much more of this stuff than I ever did. In addition to doing several rounds of caterpillars to butterflies, she's also raised tadpoles into frogs, which was pretty cool. For a long time, every peanut butter jar was promptly turned into a bug habitat.

We've had cake at previous book launch parties, but I asked about pizza this time, and they said sure. I love this bookstore :-)

This icon has never seen as much used as in the last three days
That's so wonderful to hear! I could rarely find other little girls who liked to learn about/keep the slimy/crawlies. I can say most assuredly that my exposure/interest in nature has enriched my (arguably) adult life as well.

And if I'm ever up that way some day, I'll be sure to drop in there and give a store like that some support :)

Just one wee correction: Stacia's UNHOLY GHOSTS is out. I actually took pix of it in-situ at the Waterstones in York, UK, for her a month ago. UNHOLY MAGIC is out, too. As a matter of fact, according to her site, book 3, CITY OF GHOSTS came out this week. Not that that should stop you reading or reviewing...just to let folks know the books actually are out now. :-)

Edited to add: I misread your post. UG must be the one of the four that IS out. Sorry. (blushing)

Yep -- UG is the one that's out. Also the one I'm currently reading, as it happens :-)

Oh, no pressure or anything, Jim.

The name Sherwood Smith just reminded me... Have you ever read the sci fi series "The Exordium" by Smith and Dave Trowbridge? One of my favorite books series of all time, possibly because it reminded me in some ways of Farscape. :)
Jul. 22nd, 2010 03:34 pm (UTC)
I haven't. I hadn't even realized Sherwood had collaborated with Trowbridge. Wow.

We're going to try to bring them out in e-book format.
Jul. 22nd, 2010 04:53 pm (UTC)
What about the sixth volume? Is that coming out as an e-book too?
Jul. 22nd, 2010 05:40 pm (UTC)
If Dave returns to writing! :-) We have about half of the Jaspar story written, and I have tons of notes for the sequels (2)

Wish I could come to Okemos tonight, Jim! My sister will be there instead. I've gotten her hooked on the Princess series. :)

I'd like to send review copies of one of my own books at some point, if you're okay with that.
Jul. 22nd, 2010 03:33 pm (UTC)
Sure! I make no guarantees about anything, and I'm sometimes slow, but when you're ready, just shoot me an e-mail.

Bernobich's Passion Play was really good, though should have some disclaimers for sexual manipulation and rape. Completely relevant to the story, realistic, and essential, but there nonetheless.
Jul. 22nd, 2010 03:58 pm (UTC)
I've been told rape was part of the story, but I also hear Bernobich handled it very well. It's one of the things I want to read, to see how she wrote about it.

Book signing and pizza...an awesome combination! Have fun. :)

Jim, enjoy yourself! Revel in free food like a college student! Oh, and enjoy basking in the glow of your minions!
