Realms Follow-up

Back in October, I wrote a rather snarky post (Realms Betting Pool) about the latest reincarnation of Realms of Fantasy, which had been purchased by Damnation Books.  At the time, I was not hopeful.  Damnation didn’t have the best reputation, and the owner’s defensive comments in Tobias Buckell’s blog made me want to weep for the fate of a magazine I cared about.

Four months later, I’m pleasantly surprised and a bit more optimistic.  Damnation hired on most of the same staff, including Shawna McCarthy and Doug Cohen.  For the Folkroots column, they’ve brought in kept Theodora Goss, who makes everything better simply by being Theodora Goss.  They’re buying new fiction and art, and they got the February issue out pretty much on time.

I also really like the look of the February issue.  I could nitpick font, but overall I think it’s a good cover.  (Compare this one, the first under Damnation Books, to the “fishboobs” cover that marked Realms’ previous relaunch.)

Since I voiced my skepticism back in October, it seemed only fair that I follow up by stating publicly that I might have been wrong.  I hope so.  This is only one issue of the magazine, but it looks good, and I would love to see the magazine continue.

Has anyone picked up a copy of the February issue?  What did you think?  And for the authors, have you submitted to the new incarnation of Realms, and how did that go?

Shawna picked up two of my stories in the latest buying round for Realms (yay! go me!). And I've submitted another couple to them. I haven't heard anything back yet, but they've only been on submission for a few weeks. Doug at Realms is very good at keeping people in the loop regarding the status of submissions.

Congrats on the two sales, Euan! And good luck on the submission!

I've got one story on submission; no word yet. Fingers crossed!

Now if only Damnation could do something about that ATROCIOUS website of theirs...

Snarky? You? Pshaw.

Hey, as far as online snark goes, I think most of mine is rather mild.

Also, pbbt!

Also, pbbt!

I had not considered that. Yes, I see your point. :b

The cover makes me think of Remedios Varo, which is one of the artists I mention any time a discussion of "I wish fantasy illustration would move beyond the usual suspects" comes up. So good on them.

Oh, I'm so right there with you on both Varo and "moving beyond the usual suspects".

Very encouraging and good to hear. I'll keep my fingers crossed. And hmmm...I did just write a short story....

Hey Jim,

I could nitpick about the February issue too (there is ALWAYS room for improvement), but I'm glad you like it. And in all fairness, while Theodora Goss does indeed make everything better, we actually recruited her during the days of Tir Na Nog Press. She was on track all along to take over with the Feb. issue. The fact that this coincided with the new publishers taking over was just a coincidence (an excellent and pleasant coincidence with fortuitous timing, I must admit).

Thanks for the timeline clarification. Either way, the fact that they kept on most of the staff was, I think, a very promising sign.

And of course there's something to nitpick :-) There should be. If that ever changes, it probably means you're settling.

Agreed 100%

That's encouraging! I really like that cover art, it's eye-catching and unique.

I might have to submit something!

Just got my copy the other day, and I have a sub from the last incarnation still awaiting its fate.

I have the issue but it's a couple items down in my reading list. (I'm usually a month or two behind on my magazine reading.) I've held off sending anything to the new RoF until I had an idea of how it would play out. But, if Shawna's still at the helm, I may resubmit what I sent previously.
