Fundraising for Rape Crisis Centers

April is sexual assault awareness month.

This is something that’s very important to me. I’ve written a fair amount about rape over the years, but a lot of it comes down to:

  • Rape is a horribly common crime
  • As a society, we tend to punish victims while excusing or defending many perpetrators of rape
  • While the individual rapist is always responsible for his (or her) crimes, there are cultural/societal reasons rape continues at such a frequent rate
  • Survivors of rape deserve support, no matter what

For several years, I’ve run a fundraiser and given out signed books to encourage people to donate to rape crisis centers. In the past, I’ve given out autographed books to people who donate, but this year I wanted to go even bigger. So I’ve talked to some author friends, and the net result is that you could win a lot more books this year, depending on how much money we raise.

I’ll post a running total here throughout the month. The more money we raise, the more prizes I’ll throw into the pot. Right now, we’re covered through $3000 $4000. If we raise more money, then I’ll just have to round up more authors and prizes.

The prizes so far and the amount we have to raise to add them to the giveaway are as follows.

Goals Met So Far:

Additional Prizes:

Thanks so much to all of the authors who offered books!

The rules:

You can donate to your local rape crisis center, or if you prefer, to an organization like RAINN. Most places will take donations online.

Note: As of 4/17/2012, all donations to RAINN will be matched, effectively doubling your donation.

To enter, send an e-mail to endrape@jimchines.com.

  • Let me know how much you donated so I can update the total. You can donate any amount, from $1 to $10,000 or more.
  • If you donate at least $50, please include some sort of documentation (e-mail or electronic receipt, something like that).
  • Make sure to include your mailing address!

Now, Michigan law prohibits unlicensed raffles, meaning I can’t require donations to enter. Therefore, if you can’t donate anything at all, you can still e-mail me to enter the giveaway. But for those who can, please try to give at least a few bucks.

Winners will be selected at random on May 1. If there are particular books you’d like, please mention them in your e-mail, in order of priority. But I can’t guarantee anything. I’m planning to pick winners and prizes like so:

  • Randomly draw winner #1. If they asked for a specific book, that’s what they win. Otherwise, they get the first one on the list (Libriomancer).
  • Randomly draw winner #2. If they asked for a specific book and it’s available, that’s what they win. Otherwise, they get whatever’s next on the list.
  • And so on and so forth, until all the prizes have homes.

I hope that’s clear. If anyone has questions, please let me know.

Finally, I’d very much appreciate it if people could spread the word about the fundraiser and giveaway.

I boosted the signal at my LJ. Thank you for doing this. I had the privilege to several times be a part of fandom's Sweet Charity fundraising events and RAINN was the beneficiary of that event more than once. In fact, raising money for their more than worthy efforts started Sweet Charity in the first place.

Thank you for the signal boost!

I've given out RAINN's number many times over the years. In addition to the other work they do, knowing there's a number that anyone in the U.S. can call to be connected to the closest rape crisis center is a tremendous service.

+1 signal boost.
Redeemed some online survey money; when it arrives I'll be able to donate.

Thank you x 2! Very much appreciated.

Although I'm somewhat new to following your blog, I've really enjoyed it so far, so this is like a thank you for your entries and making us think and discussing things that we'd sometimes rather not think about. Thank you!

How about for the max level you will come to that person's house and do their yardwork?
Apr. 11th, 2012 03:02 pm (UTC)
I can't even keep up with *my* yardwork!

I've already got two more cool prizes to add into the mix, but I think I'm going to wait to announce those :-)

Signal boosted. Thanks for doing this.

Thank you for the signal boost!

How do I donate signed books?
Apr. 11th, 2012 07:21 pm (UTC)
Nevermind. I found the instructions. :-)

Contributed what little I could, posted to FB & Twitter, and if you could add a repost button to this entry on the LJ side, that would be marvelous.

Thank you, and done.

ETA: Or maybe not ... crud. Every time I update the post with the new total, it overwrites the code on LJ and removes the button.

Well, thanks for trying. (I should probably just make it a clickthrough link anyway, and keep all the discussion in one place.)

Boosted the signal at my FB page! :)

Much appreciated, thank you!

Question - is your draw open to US residents only or would Canada count? And would donations to Canadian Rape Crisis Centers count? Cause although RAINN is wonderful I generally prefer to make my donations closer to home, and if I repost on FB many of my friends are Canadian (oddly enough!)so it would be useful to know for their sake.
I'm OK if the answer is no in either case - I generally support my local centre anyway & quite understand if you don't want to undertake postage our of the US - just thought I would ask.

Canadian residents and donations to Canadian rape centers totally count. There are some authors who aren't able to ship outside the U.S., but if your name gets drawn, I'll make sure we're able to hook you up with something one way or another!
Apr. 11th, 2012 09:42 pm (UTC)
Excellent - thanks! Will get back to you with entry separately.
Apr. 11th, 2012 09:06 pm (UTC)
I've already donated to my local center for my own reasons (and before you posted this), so I don't think it'd be fair to count my donations...but I still want to say thank you for doing this.
Apr. 11th, 2012 11:49 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I can't quite justify adding that to the donations raised here, but you can totally e-mail me anyway to get in on the drawing. Consider it karma for donating to your local rape crisis center already.

I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to donate (I'm living pretty much paycheque to paycheque right now), but I'm spreading the word. I've reposted this in my journal, hoping that others will pass the word as well.
Apr. 12th, 2012 10:30 pm (UTC)
If you're not in a position to donate, I certainly understand. (And you can still enter the drawing.)

I appreciate the linkback, thank you!

Another LJ signal boost here. Between fixed income and skyrocketing medical costs, that's all I can manage. Dammit.

I ran my own benefit where I edited folks' resumes for donations to Bay Area Women Against Rape on my FirstGiving page...I'm in California so that's the local service. Raised $431 but would also like to contribute here since there are more interesting offerings ;)

I'm a fulltime caregiver for my grandma and have been trying my hand at fanfic to pass the time at home and have a piece for House M.D. I'm willing to have you auction off for donations.

Description below:

I'm offering: A House fanfiction trilogy, where the eminent, brilliant, but tormented diagnostician moves to San Francisco to recover from his time in prison and finds himself seduced by a tough, smart, feisty working class girl from the East Bay. Science content, medical research, romance and humor and commentary on political issues surrounding mental illness and sexual assault. 15,000 or so words, already written.

Please let me know if that works, I'll email it directly to whoever donates (and also to you if you wish.) The piece deals in a snarky/clever way with rape and healing and is loosely based on my own experience.

Hello, and thank you! Your willingness to donate is much appreciated, but I'm afraid the fundraiser ended back at the end of April.
