Juggling

For the past month or two, I’ve felt like I’m struggling more than usual to keep up with everything. I’ve felt more stressed and frazzled, and I’m having a harder time making sure nothing slips through the cracks.

Then this weekend I stepped back and realized I’m currently juggling four different books in different stages of production. Rise of the Spider Goddess comes out in eight days, with Unbound being released a month later. I’m trying to finish up the first draft of Revisionary, and there’s more revision work I need to do on Secret Unnamed Project of DOOM.

Oh. Well, that would explain it, I suppose. It doesn’t make things any less of a struggle, but it’s helpful to realize there’s a legit reason for feeling frazzled, and it’s not all just in my head.

I’m thinking for 2015, I may need to step back and take a good look at my priorities and time management and such, because what’s worked in the past doesn’t seem to be working quite as well these days. I have some thoughts on that front, though I’m not ready to get into details publicly just yet. (I will note that million-dollar movie or book deals are always welcome, and would simplify certain things immensely. I’m sure they’d add complications of their own, but that’s a risk I’m willing to take.)

On the bright side, we did make time yesterday to get out and see Big Hero Six, which was a lot of fun. A few plot questions, but still fun.

Anyway, things should calm down a little bit over the next month or so. And in the meantime, I hope you’ll bear with me if I’m taking a bit more time than usual to respond to things.

Hmm. I've been sensing some changes coming down in the system as well, and have been thinking about how to adjust my lower level (than yours) writing life and system. I wonder if anyone else is having these feelings?

Maybe it's an end-of-the-year thing.

You're not alone here on the frazzled. This has been a very frazzlacious year. Between various sorts of real world stuff, multiple books, and all the other bits, it's been a stretch despite being far and away my most successful authorial year.

Congrats on a great year, but yeah ... it definitely wipes you out. Haven't you got those cats trained to do some of the work for you yet?

Man, I keep trying, but they won't take dictation, and their copyediting is terrible. Oh, and thanks!

I'll check out that link.

For me, the past month or two feels like running down a hill and being right on the verge of falling and tumbling the rest of the way. Running as fast as you can just to keep up with your own momentum.

Good luck to us both!

I went down and started bouncing in September. Now, I'm just trying to ball up and not take too much damage on the way down the slope.

Frazzled here, too, mostly fighting off viruses. (Dammit, I got my flu shot, where'd this latest norovirus come from? *wry*)

Also, I've requested that the local library system acquire Unbound, and I think they will, since they've got the first two books, so yay for that (even though it's not in my nonexistent book budget, *somebody* buys it for me to read).

Juggling four books *and* have major roles at conventions. And a day job and family. I'd cut you some slack.

That sounds like my year too--and I also sat back at one point and said: two novels, a nonfiction book, a self-pub rerelease of a nonfiction book, and a prequel novella...no WONDER I'm so frazzled!

And also looking at working on the balance thing here, although at the moment, I'm just trying to survive the release of novel #2 on Dec 2nd and get through the holiday season at the shop.

Oh, and if you ever want to guest blog to promo, you're always welcome.

Thanks! I may take you up on that.

Happy Book Week, and good luck to us both!

I don't promise not to gush about how wonderful your work is, though...

Onward and upward, forward ever sideways!

Go easy on yourself, Jim. :) It sounds like you're incredibly busy and stressed. Good luck with finishing your books! I've pre-ordered Unbound and Rise of the Spider Goddess, and I look forward to reading them when they come out.
