Candygate, in a Nutshell

So this happened…

(Also, this is my first time at trying to embed Tweets in a blog post, so I apologize in advance if it breaks something.)

After the nonsense going on around me today, I really needed this laugh!

I live to serve :-)

*snrch* *chortle*

I like blue M&Ms. They make me feel that I am doing something very bold and transgressive when I eat them.

Yes, this is a sad, sad statement, but it must be stated nonetheless. Why? Um, candyghazi!

I grew up near Buffalo when we regularly, as in 1964, got many feet of snow and I had to walk uphill both ways to school (which we could see from our kitchen window with a depression in between), and WE didn't have Blue M&M's. The kids these days with their blue M&M's and their Left and Right Twix bars, twitching their pound signs over the Intertubes... What is the world coming to?

Especially since I can't tell if this rant is for or against candygate or for or against cangyghazi. All I know is that the Kindle wants to convert the latter to Confucius, which must mean something!

I would absolutely wear a t-shirt that said CJW or Confectioner's Advocate. :D

That was awesome.

It definitely made my afternoon more entertaining :-)

Thank you for the absurdity! It puts a lot of the rest of the world in perspective, if not context.

finally, something to really get going about.. grin.

but I voted for the purple M&Ms ...

Nov. 25th, 2014 02:13 am (UTC)
Purple would still be weird, but better than our current Candy Bluestrosity!
Nov. 25th, 2014 01:37 am (UTC)
I still mourn the loss of the tan M&Ms. Those were my favorites, for some reason. Woez.
Nov. 25th, 2014 10:58 am (UTC)
I'm with you. I'd've handled *adding* the blue ones, but replacing tan? Get out of town.
Nov. 25th, 2014 02:05 am (UTC)
I blame Turbo.
Nov. 25th, 2014 02:39 am (UTC)
I don't really mind the blue ones, even if they still look weird to me, but I wish they hadn't dropped the tan ones for them. M&Ms need more earth tones to properly balance the palette.

This cracked me up. My hard candy shell and everything. Unfortunately, I am allergic to M&Ms of all colors (seriously--it's the artificial food coloring...cruel, isn't it?) so I don't have a horse in this race.

I'm a candy snob anyway, and only eat SERIOUS chocolate. It must come in a gold foil box and cost as much as a small car, or I can't be bothered.
Nov. 25th, 2014 07:34 pm (UTC)
Me too, which doesn't stop me until I start having trouble breathing, and I think "crap, did it to myself again".

I also tend to go for the high end chocolate, who knew a company that sounds like laundry fuzz (Lindt) would make such tasty treats?
Nov. 25th, 2014 08:08 pm (UTC)
I can breathe okay--it's just those burning blisters on the inside of my mouth that slow me down.
Nov. 25th, 2014 03:21 am (UTC)
There is a very easy solution to your hate of blue M&Ms. You should all give all of the blue M&Ms to me, and I will assure that none of you ever have to see those blue monstrosities ever again. Guarranteed!
Nov. 25th, 2014 03:29 am (UTC)
Color, shmolor. I find the blue M&Ms less palatable because they have a faint metallic aftertaste. I doubt my own taste-buds -- can I really taste a difference between the candy dyes?* But that's my perception, so I eat the blues first, then get rid of that aftertaste with the other colors. I usually end with yellow, but that's a visual preference; I like yellow.

*A friend says she once had a student who could identify all the colors by taste -- they (teachers and school therapists) tested him blindfolded, and he was never wrong. I think I'm glad my taste-buds aren't that sensitive.

If you're curious, there are little strips you can buy that will tell you if you're a "supertaster," even a mild one. They're like little pH strips that have been soaked in a bitter flavor that most people can't detect. Put one in your mouth, and if you taste anything, you fall on the "supertaster" scale.

If it helps, I remember from a food show that many blue dyes have some sort of metal powder in them, so if they taste metallic, that's actually a thing.
Nov. 26th, 2014 02:48 am (UTC)
Now that you remind me -- during my high school physiology class, the teacher brought in those strips. I wasn't able to taste the bitter flavor, so not a 'supertaster'. However, something affects my taste perceptions; I find most green vegetables bitter -- one pea is enough to contaminate a spoonful of pot pie.

Not cool that metal powder is used in blue dyes (Really, food developers? You think metal powder is an edible substance?), but cool to know the taste wasn't completely my imagination. Thanks for letting me know.

Excuse me, CJWs?

Re: confused
Candy Justice Warriors.

(Don't know if that will help the confusion or not...)

This seems like the time to bring up the abominations that go by the name Palmer. They look like chocolate, and come in shiny foil wrappers, but their cocoa content is so low you'll wonder why you just didn't skip the candy and eat a candle instead.

I was just having a very serious and melancholy conversation with friends about the disappearance of tan M&M's and the travesty that is blue.
Nov. 26th, 2014 08:20 am (UTC)
Hahaha! I needed that.

I like all M&M's, including the blue ones. :)

But what is your stance on toasted marshmallows, Jim? I think that's the real question we've all been avoiding. ;)
Nov. 26th, 2014 11:33 pm (UTC)
Your problem is you aren't used to colour variety. Did the Smarties in Aus blow your mind with their 8 different colours?
Nov. 28th, 2014 07:53 am (UTC)
I am used to the variety. :) I just like all m&ms, regardless of colour.

Fie, Smarties are delicious old news! We have rainbow paddle pop ice cream, rainbow snake sweets and Skittles in Australia, so we are used to seeing colourful sweets everywhere. :)
