Zoo Pics

DemiCon was much fun! We got back last night, and I’m still recovering and catching up. So here are a few pictures from our pre-convention trip to Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines. (Big thanks to Amanda for schlepping us back and forth from the hotel!)

The full album is over on my Flickr page.

Next up is processing the convention pics and getting them uploaded…

Aww, it's a budgie! (Do people still keep budgies as pets? They were the little-old-lady companion-of-choice when I was a kid in the UK, snappy dogs and budgerigars - but I haven't seen one for decades. And I have no idea if they ever held that status in the US...)

People still keep them as pets over here, as far as I know :-)

I live in London, and I have a budgie! His name is Hermes, and he likes to join in all my phone conversations. I am 46, so old-lady status will have to wait a little bit longer :-)

Yay budgie! I am delighted. Does Hermes actually speak, or does he just sing? I can't remember if budgies are mimetic. One of our neighbours when I was a kid had a mynah bird, and that had a whole galaxy of phrases (and now I'm wondering if people still keep mynah birds as pets, because again, not seen one since the '60s...).

I haven't seen a mynah outside a zoo or aviary. I gather they're rare as family pets these days because the breeding stock is limited and so they mostly get snapped up by zoos and serious collectors and never make it to pet shops.

Some budgies do speak, especially if they're kept as single birds and so only interact with humans. Hermes had a companion for most of his life (now sadly deceased), so he doesn't talk, but he does make an astonishing array of natural sounds. Often, if you listen with your eyes closed, you could believe there were three or four different birds in there. The noise grows exponentially as you add more budgies - a previous partner of mine, on being told that the late racing driver James Hunt owned over a hundred budgies, commented "A hundred budgies? That's practically an infinite number!"

If you ever get the chance, the Omaha Zoo is quite good. They have a domed enclosure of a tropical rain forest, very cool.
