How to Celebrate the Quittening

In 2.5 weeks, I will be leaving full-time employment with the State of Michigan, where I’ve worked for almost 15 years. I’m brainstorming how best to celebrate this transition to More Writing and Less Commuting. Here are the ideas I’ve come up with so far…

  • Writing-related tattoo! (Probably something with Snoopy at his typewriter.)
  • Stormtrooper armor. Or maybe Boba Fett. (Very pricy, and since I’m losing my regular paycheck, this one’s unlikely.)
  • Custom lightsaber.
  • Dye the beard a random and interesting color. Or colors.
  • Fancy new high-quality zoom lens for the camera.

It goes without saying that sleeping 72 hours straight will be a vital part of the celebration.

What do you think? Any other suggestions?

I'd vote for the lens.

Or a fire spider tattoo. :-)

Give yourself time to sit down and vege for a couple of days. Just do fun stuff. Read.

A few days of NOTHING are very much on the schedule :-)

Buy yourself a new office chair.

Do you have an alarm clock you can smash?
Aug. 12th, 2015 04:39 pm (UTC)
Selfishly, I'd vote for the lens and more better photos. :)

However, the suggestion of a new office chair has a lot to recommend it, says the fellow who has been working from home for several years...

You're not the first to recommend a good chair :-)
Aug. 12th, 2015 05:22 pm (UTC)
Yeah, my good chair is upstairs in the disassembled office while I'm waiting for the floors to be sanded and I am noticing the difference.

Either stormtrooper armor is omgwtfbbq expensive . . . or you're looking at a different stratum of "fancy new high quality" than my father is when he talks about zoom lenses. O_O

Complete set of stormtrooper armor looks to run between $2K and $3K.

The lenses are pricy, but the ones I'm looking at aren't *that* expensive.
Aug. 12th, 2015 04:57 pm (UTC)
I'd class that as omg expensive, but not quite rising to wtfbbq levels. :-)

Recreate the Office Space fax machine scene? Right out front of your old workplace would be most awesome, like a pinata sort of. Or insist on a fax machine pinata at your last day of work and have all your coworkers go in on bashing it?

But really, I recommend being slovenly the first few days. Sleep as much as you want, like you said, wear pajamas all the time, etc.

You should have an Office-Warming! It's like a housewarming, but is specific to making your writing nest awesome. Your friends should get you a new chair, good blinds for the window, a remote-controlled mini-fridge, a case of your favorite beverage for brainstorming, etc.

You like to take photos enough the new lens for the camera sounds like a good idea. Dying the beard or hair is pretty cheap (cost-wise); if you want recc's for unusual color dye brands, I'm your girl; I've tried a LOT of them.

I do like the above idea of a fire spider tattoo. :)

I dye the kids with Splat, but if you'd like to switch it up (a different color every 'day Of NOTHING'?), this is pretty fun: http://www.manicpanic.com/dyehard-temporary-styling-gels

Also, YAY, YOU!!

And if you want a tattoo artist rec, my guy who did my Stephen King / Seanan McGuire mashup tattoo (among others) is on the border between South Lansing and Holt. ;)

/uh, is only a little creeped out, thanks
/has a f'locked journal for a reason

You could just ask.

I should have just asked; my apologies. (Access to that photo appears to be locked, as well, but it does sound like a brilliant piece of ink.)

Arg, blasted LJ photo settings. Why is there no "public" option.

This link might work?
Aug. 13th, 2015 02:26 pm (UTC)
Oh, wow, that is GLORIOUS. (And I begin to think I remember seeing that comment on Seanan's journal originally, as well.)

When I finally retire from my State IT job I am going to burn a pile of quarterly reports in my driveway and dance around the bonfire.

Or a new office chair does sound nice.

I intend to do something similar but I'm worried it'll end up summoning something.... lol

Get a 3d printer. Make fire spider prints to sell at conventions.
print your own cosplay armor

No suggestions, but hearty Congrats!

All your hard work has finally paid off. Well done, that man :)

You don't already have a writery tattoo? That's on my to-do list for when I get a book published.

I will also vote for "new office chair". And a new camera lens. Also, the spider tattoo.

I am very pro-tattoos. Snoopy would be cute but, reading the comments, a fire spider tattoo would be fantastic. The one time I ever desperately wanted a McDonalds Happy Meal toy was when it was Writer Snoopy (and I still have him!), so I can definitely understand how good that would be as a tattoo. My solution would be to get both tattoos, but that's just me.

That's the toy where he's typing and the stickers come out of the typewriter? I've got that one on my desk at work :-)
Aug. 15th, 2015 09:06 pm (UTC)
That's the one! I have it on my desk here at home.
