Puppy Essay in Der Zauberspiegel

German zine Der Zauberspiegel invited Brad Torgersen, Adam-Troy Castro, Lou Berger, Wayne Borean, and myself to write about the Sad/Rabid Puppy phenomenon. Those essays went up yesterday. The English translation of mine is here, or you can read it in German.

Links to all of the articles are available in English or German.

Shocking nobody, my article (in English) has already drawn its first troll…

I forgot for a moment about the Hugo awards and thought you were talking about actual baby dogs, which made the troll extra confusing (who the hell would troll adorable bitty canines?). Then my brain came back to me and I had a sad.

D'oh! Tweaked the blog text to hopefully make that more clear.

No worries ;) My perplexity over how people would be confused over actual puppies being a phenomenon ("But they're so cute, of course they're a phenomenon on the internet! I mean, they're not at the level of cats, but...") is rather amusing in retrospect.

I'm curious why they invited five men and zero women to write articles.

Brad, presumably because he's the head Sad Puppy this year.

The other four ... that's a great question.

Yeah; Brad, I assumed was a given because he was one of the major players. But since one of the major complaints of the Sad and Rabid Puppies is that they feel books by/about women, queer people and people of color are promoted over 'better' books because of some kind of PC police, it would seem to make sense to have someone from those categories addressing that.

Ironically there is a conspiracy, excluding women, and it's called patriarchy, and the Puppies simply refuse to acknowledge that it exists.

Oh, I figure the Puppies are, if not a lost cause, then hard mode. I like to think everyone else is easier to convince.

"Well, yes, the Futurians technically predated First Fandom, but they didn't count since they all went on to be writers."

Well, that's one article that's not worth reading.

I read that whole post as largely sarcastic/satirical, but I could be wrong.

Jim, thank you for showing all of the contradictions within BT's statements in particular, and for providing the links.

Your essay remind me of Jon Stewart -- some of my favorite of his moments has been when he shows video clips of politicians directly contradicting themselves via hypocritical statements.

Didn't realize you were a leader of the SJW's. Onward!

Heck, at one point, Sarah Hoyt was saying I was president of SFWA, too!
