Blood Donors: Want to Join Team Hellspark?

For those of you who donate blood and use the Red Cross Blood Donor App, I’ve created a team called Hellsparks.

It’s named after the Janet Kagan book. At 4′ 11″, Janet didn’t meet the weight requirements to donate, so she posted a request on her website, asking others to do so and offering a special gift to those who did.

I figured if I was going to create a blood donation team of my fellow SF/F folks, it was fitting to name it in her honor. (My thanks to Ricky Kagan, who gave his blessing to use the name.)

Consider this your official invitation to join the Hellsparks and save some lives.

Cover of HellsparkTo encourage folks to spread the word, I’ll be giving away two Kindle copies of Hellspark. (One of my favorite books of all time.)

  1. Leave a comment on this post, and voila! You’re entered.
  2. If you join Team Hellspark, mention that in the comment for a second chance to win!

I know not everyone is able to donate blood, and not everyone who does donates through the Red Cross. (Which is why I decided to give away two copies instead of just one. I wouldn’t want anyone to feel excluded!)

Thank you.

What a great thing to do. Alas, they don't want my blood (which is too bad, since I am O neg) but I hope people who can donate will.

Prior to being diagnosed with my immune disorder I was a regular donor and gave over a gallon. Unfortunately my days of being a donor are now over, so my great thanks to those who donate blood and sell plasma as you literally keep me alive.

thewayne - you're the second winner of an ebook of Hellspark!

Could you please email me at jchines@sff.net and let me know

1. Do you have a Kindle account?
2. What's the email address associated with that account, so I can buy you your book?

All the best,

I am disqualified from donating, but, I have gotten a transfusion during surgery, and I have always appreicated those who do donate.

Do you know if Bloodsource works with Red Cross? I haven't tried the app, but give regularly.

I'm not sure. To be honest, the Red Cross app isn't that great. I'm hoping they'll eventually update it to add a few more features for the teams...

I really wish I could find the blood donor pledge I signed at a Star Trek convention in 1977, countersigned by Robert Heinlein. One of the few unambiguously good things he did was promote blood donation. While I didn't keep the precise terms of the pledge (I was supposed to donate on my sixteenth birthday and am pretty sure I didn't), I have donated a lot of blood since -- got a three-gallon pin a while back.

I am no longer able to donate, alas, but am grateful to those who still can and do.

This is a terrific idea! Thanks so much for the post Jim. I can't donate blood unfortunately (I weigh enough, but blood drives staff tell me my veins are too small).

However! I can mention Hell sparks on my lj blog.

Good luck to team Hellspark. I'm sorry I can't join, but I can't give blood anymore (non-life-threatening health issue).

Holy crap, I'd no idea she'd died! Hers was my fave ST book ever.

I am a regular blood donor, but I will continue for her, if not for my own reasons. BC she was/is awesome.
