Trailer Roundup

It’s movie trailer season!

1. Thor: Ragnarok – I love the banter between Thor and Hulk/Banner. Everything I’ve seen about this movie looks like fun.

2. Star Trek: Discovery – I’m intrigued enough to want to see more, and it will be nice to have some new television-style Star Trek. We don’t have CBS All Access, but I’m sure it will be available on Blu-ray eventually.

3. Ready Player One – I know a lot of people loved this one, but for some reason, the book just didn’t work for me, and the trailer seems to be following suit. The trailer looks pretty, but it doesn’t grab me.

4. Justice League – I don’t know. DC’s cinematic universe has let me down again and again…but then they did Wonder Woman, and I started to hope again. This looks like it could be fun. Or it could be a mess. I’m withholding judgement for the moment.

Which ones, if any, are you looking forward to?

The Trek one looks good--for the first time in decades.

I'm also in the minority of being GenX and not liking Ready Player One. The thing that turned me off was Wade being an elitist complaining about "poseurs" in the early part of the book...and he reminded me of many geek assholes I've met.

Stalking Artemis further cemented my dislike for him.

I read Ready Player One on the recommendation of my 11yo nephew. And.... I can really see why he liked it, but HOT DAMN there's a whole lot of author-filibuster "Oh yeah? Well all those things I cared so much about consuming and 'wasted' all that time on will SAVE THE WORLD SOME DAY, MOM" segments. As well as a fair pile of "teenaged geek hates people who don't share his obsessions and don't think the same things are important".

I found the rest of the book reasonably okay. And the idea that someone rode herd on Cline while writing the screenplay, and Spielberg directing, means I'm cautiously optimistic about the movie.

(Meanwhile, this looks like the first good Star Trek since Galaxy Quest, and I'm there day 1 for Thor. Justice League just looks like the first three truly awful DCCU movies done again, and more, like they learned nothing from Wonder Woman. I hope I'm wrong, it would be nice for DC movies to start being good-on-the-regular instead of "holy shit, one was GOOD? HOW THE FUCK DID THAT HAPPEN?")

Thor used to be the Avenger I was least interested in, but this new one looks amazing so far. I love that both Bruce and Hulk get to have funny lines, and the director is great.

I'm looking forward to Justice League, though I haven't liked this version of Superman.

I really, really want this Star Trek to be good.

I am praying to any deity who will listen that The Dark Tower comes through alright in its big screen treatment. I'm optimistic- but as I fangirl the series hard enough that I have two DT tattoos, I'm cautiously so. (And for the record, my concerns are entirely story-treatment-specific; I think Idris Elba is a glorious choice for Roland.)
